Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 172) This is the incident of Hamra’ al-Asad, that is, the day after the Battle of Uhud. The details are that when the polytheists, after returning from Uhud, had gone a few stages away, they began to say among themselves that what foolishness we committed by returning without completely finishing off the Muslims. Thus, they began to plan another attack on Madinah. On the other hand, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) received this information, he ordered the Muslims to set out in pursuit of the polytheists, so that they would not actually turn back and attack Madinah. At that time, although most of those who had participated in Uhud were severely wounded and exhausted, they immediately set out in obedience to the command of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). When they reached Hamra’ al-Asad (a place about eight miles from Madinah), the polytheists received news of their coming and said among themselves that this time let us return, we will come again next year. In view of this situation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) also returned to Madinah. Thus, the verse refers to this incident and gives glad tidings to the Muslims. (Ibn Kathir)
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her nephew Urwah: “O my nephew! Both your fathers, Zubair (your father) and Abu Bakr (your maternal grandfather), were among them. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) suffered those hardships at Uhud and the polytheists departed, he felt fear that they might return, so he said: ‘Who will go after them?’ So seventy men among them responded, including Abu Bakr and Zubair.” [ بخاری، المغازی، باب : «الذین استجابوا للہ والرسول» : ۴۰۷۷، عن عائشۃ رضی اللہ عنہا ]
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
172. 1. When the polytheists returned from the Battle of Uhud, on the way they thought that they had wasted a golden opportunity. Because the Muslims, due to their defeat, were fearful and discouraged, they should have taken advantage of this and launched a full attack on Madinah so that this plant of Islam would be uprooted from its very land (Madinah). On the other hand, when the Prophet ﷺ reached Madinah, he also feared that they might return, so he encouraged the Companions to prepare for battle, and the Companions got ready. When this caravan of Muslims reached 'Hamra’ al-Asad', which is 8 miles from Madinah, the polytheists felt fear, so their intention changed and instead of attacking Madinah, they returned to Makkah. After that, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions also returned to Madinah. In the verse, this spirit of obedience to Allah and His Messenger by the Muslims is praised. Some have mentioned the reason for revelation as the threat of Abu Sufyan that next year there would be a confrontation at Badr Sughra. (Abu Sufyan had not yet become Muslim) Upon this, the Muslims also demonstrated their spirit of obedience to Allah and His Messenger and resolved to participate fully in jihad. (Summarized from Fath al-Qadir and Ibn Kathir, but this last opinion does not fit with the context)
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
172. Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger even after suffering injury [170], for those among them who do good and are mindful of Allah, there is a great reward.
[170] Hazrat Aisha Siddiqaؓ said to her nephew Urwah bin Zubairؓ: (O my nephew, your father and your maternal grandfather) Abu Bakr Siddiqؓ was also among those people. When, on the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allahﷺ had suffered what was destined, and the polytheists (of Makkah) had returned, he became concerned that they might come back and attack again. Therefore, he said: Who will pursue these disbelievers? Upon hearing this command, seventy men got ready for the pursuit, among whom were Abu Bakr Siddiqؓ and Zubair as well. [بخاری، کتاب المغازی، باب : __QUR_0__ ] For the explanation of this verse, see footnote number 137 of this Surah.
