وَمَا كَانَ قَوْلَهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا ٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِىٓ أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿147﴾
And they said nothing but: "Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and our transgressions (in keeping our duties to You), establish our feet firmly, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk."
وَمَا wamā And not
كَانَ kāna were
قَوْلَهُمْ qawlahum their words
إِلَّآ illā except
أَن an that
قَالُوا۟ qālū they said
رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord
ٱغْفِرْ igh'fir forgive
لَنَا lanā for us
ذُنُوبَنَا dhunūbanā our sins
وَإِسْرَافَنَا wa-is'rāfanā and our excesses
فِىٓ in
أَمْرِنَا amrinā our affairs
وَثَبِّتْ wathabbit and make firm
أَقْدَامَنَا aqdāmanā our feet
وَٱنصُرْنَا wa-unṣur'nā and give us victory
عَلَى ʿalā over
ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi [the people]
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna the disbelievers

147. Their only prayer was: “Our Lord! Forgive our sins and our excesses in our affairs, make our steps firm [135], and help us against the disbelieving people.”

[135] That is, the reliance of the believers is not merely on the equipment of war, the strength of manpower, or their own performance, but at the same time, even on the battlefield, they remember Allah, seek forgiveness for their mistakes from Him, and pray for steadfastness and victory over the enemy. In the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself spent the entire night praying to Allah for victory and help over the enemy. A similar prayer was also made by the army of Talut, which is mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse number 250.
