Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but if some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqûn [the pious - See V.2:2], not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allâh surrounds all that they do.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 120) {اِنْتَمْسَسْكُمْحَسَنَةٌتَسُؤْهُمْ …:} In this verse, Muslims are taught that the only way to remain safe from the deceit and schemes of the enemies is to act with patience, steadfastness, and piety. If you adopt these principles, they will not be able to harm you. Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "Most of the hypocrites were also from among the Jews, therefore, along with mentioning them, the Jews are also mentioned. Now ahead, the matters of the Battle of Uhud are mentioned, because in that as well, some Muslims listened to some of the disbelievers and turned back from the battle, and the hypocrites revealed their hypocrisy." (Mowdih)
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
120. 1. In this, the intense enmity of the hypocrites is mentioned, which they had towards the believers, and that when prosperity befell the Muslims, when they received support and help from Allah, and when the number and strength of the Muslims increased, the hypocrites were greatly displeased. And if the Muslims were afflicted with famine or hardship, or if, by Allah’s will and wisdom, the enemy temporarily prevailed over the Muslims (as happened in the Battle of Uhud), they would be very happy. The purpose of mentioning this is: can people who are like this be worthy of Muslims increasing bonds of love with them and making them confidants and friends? This is why Allah has also forbidden friendship with the Jews and Christians (as is mentioned in other places in the Noble Quran). Because they too harbor hatred and enmity towards the Muslims, are displeased with their successes, and are happy with their failures.
120. 2. This is the way and remedy to protect oneself from their deceit and trickery. That is, patience and piety are absolutely necessary to protect oneself from the conspiracies of the hypocrites and other enemies of Islam and the Muslims. The lack of this patience and piety has made the conspiracies of the non-Muslims successful. People think that the success of the disbelievers is the result of material means, abundance of resources, and their progress in science and technology. Whereas in reality, the real reason for the decline and downfall of the Muslims is that they have been deprived of steadfastness (the garment of patience) upon their religion and are devoid of piety, which are the keys to the success of the Muslims and the means of attaining divine support.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
120. If any good befalls you, it grieves them, and if a misfortune strikes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain patient and fear Allah, their scheming will not harm you in the least. [109] Surely, Allah encompasses all that they do.
[109] If you are met with any occasion of happiness, they burn with jealousy, and if any hardship befalls you, they are overjoyed with delight. So, is it not better to avoid friendship with such people? Just be patient. Their conspiracies and propaganda cannot harm you in the least, because Allah Himself is keeping a strict watch over them. In verses 118 to 120, in these three verses, Allah Almighty has stated the reasons for prohibiting friendship with disbelievers, which are briefly as follows: 1. Among you, they leave no stone unturned in creating mischief, corruption, and disorder, and their utmost effort is to sow division, discord, and enmity among you. 2. They wish that you become entangled in some earthly or heavenly calamity and misfortune. 3. Sometimes, such words slip from their mouths which reveal the contents brewing in their hearts. 4. You love them while they are hostile towards you, even though you believe in their book, the Torah, and they deny your book, the Quran. The logical result of this should be that they are hostile to you and you are friendly to them, which is a completely backwards state of affairs.. 5. If any good comes to you, they burn with jealousy, and if any harm befalls you, they are inwardly overjoyed. 6. Even if they speak to you with apparent goodwill, it is based on hypocrisy. Therefore, for these reasons, you should not befriend them, let alone confide your secrets to them.
