The Fate of the Jews:
Although in this verse the address is directed to all types of disbelievers, the Jews of Madinah in particular are its addressees. What happened was that when Allah Almighty granted the Muslims a great victory in the Battle of Badr, and as a result, Abdullah bin Ubayy (the chief of the hypocrites) along with his companions accepted Islam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the Jews of Banu Qaynuqa who lived in the midst of Madinah and said, "O Jews! Accept Islam and you will remain in safety, otherwise you will meet the same fate as the polytheists of Makkah." But instead of accepting the advice, they became boastful and said that the disbelievers of Makkah were ignorant and unfamiliar with the arts of war, which is why they were defeated; if you face us, then you will understand. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse. After that, the fulfillment of this prophecy of Allah Almighty, word for word, is witnessed by history: the first to be exiled were these very Jews, Banu Qaynuqa. They took refuge in Khaybar. Then the Jews of Banu Nadir were exiled, and they too went to Khaybar. Then came the turn of Banu Qurayza, who were killed and made into slaves and maidservants. Then, when the Jews were defeated in Khaybar, they requested to remain there as tenant farmers, which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted. However, since the Jews are a nation prone to mischief, due to their mischiefs, eventually Hazrat Umar ؓ expelled them from there as well. Remember, this prophecy regarding the disbelievers was made at a time when an atmosphere of constant fear and terror prevailed over the Muslims, although by that time the foundation of a small, nascent Islamic state had been laid. But in every respect, they were weak and in the minority, and the polytheists, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites of all Arabia were determined to wipe this state off the face of the earth, and in comparison to all these groups, there seemed to be no sign of success for the Muslims. But Allah's help was with the Muslims in such a way, and circumstances changed so dramatically, that all these factions were defeated one after another, and within a few years, Islam prevailed throughout Arabia.
