Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a secure sanctuary, while men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in Bâtil (falsehood - polytheism, idols and all deities other than Allâh), and deny (become ingrate for) the Graces of Allâh?

(Ayah 67) {اَوَلَمْيَرَوْااَنَّاجَعَلْنَاحَرَمًااٰمِنًا … :} Previously, the blessing of granting security after putting the people of Makkah in fear during sea journeys was mentioned; now, the blessing of granting security on land without putting them in any fear is mentioned, at a time when the entire Arabia was deprived of this blessing. In {’’ اَوَلَمْيَرَوْا ‘‘}, the conjunction "waaw" is actually before the interrogative "hamzah," but since the interrogative "hamzah" comes at the beginning, the "waaw" is placed after it. Therefore, the translation of "waaw" is done before the "hamzah" as "And have they not seen...?" That is, at a time when the entire Arabian Peninsula around them is in such a state that neither life nor wealth is safe, and no one knows when he might be taken away. In these circumstances, the people of Makkah have security in Makkah because of the Haram, to the extent that even if someone sees his father's killer in the Haram, he says nothing to him, and then, even in distant journeys during winter and summer, because they are residents of the Haram, no one says anything to them. 67-1 Allah Almighty is mentioning this favor that He bestowed upon the people of Makkah, that We made their sanctuary a place of security, in which its inhabitants are safe from killing, bloodshed, captivity, looting, etc. While other regions of Arabia are deprived of this peace and tranquility; killing and bloodshed are common and daily activities among them.
67-2 That is, is this the gratitude for this blessing that they associate partners with Allah, and continue to worship false deities and idols? The demand of this favor was that they worship only one Allah and affirm His Messenger.

Do they not see that We have made the Sacred Sanctuary [99] secure, while people are being snatched away all around them? Then do they believe in falsehood and deny the blessings of Allah?
[99] The Benefits the Quraysh of Makkah Received Due to the Sanctuary of Makkah:
Allah Almighty alone made Makkah and its surroundings a sanctuary, and for two and a half thousand years these people have been benefiting from the advantages of this peaceful sanctuary, living a secure and peaceful life, safe from the plundering of the Arab tribes. Because of this, they also enjoy political authority throughout Arabia. Provisions reach them from distant places, and they gain many commercial benefits as well. No idol—Lat, Manat, Hubal, or any other—had the power to make this land a peaceful sanctuary. The demand of this blessing from Allah was that these people should have shown gratitude to Allah and lived as His obedient servants. But instead of showing gratitude to Allah, they were associating other deities as partners with Him.
