And indeed We have left thereof an evident Ayâh (a lesson and a warning and a sign - the place where the Dead Sea is now in Palestine) for a folk who understand.

(Ayah 35) {وَلَقَدْتَّرَكْنَامِنْهَاۤاٰيَةًبَيِّنَةً …:} By the clear sign is meant the remnants of that town which still remain. This happened in such a way that Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, uprooted their towns from the depths of the earth and raised them up to the clouds of the sky, then turned them upside down and threw them down (as a result, that entire region sank far below the surface of the earth), and upon them was rained a shower of layered stones of baked clay, which were marked by the Lord, the Exalted. This incident is a sign in the sense that this area is located on the trade route that goes from Makkah to Syria, and the disbelievers of Makkah could see it with their own eyes when coming and going on their trade journeys, to witness what happened to the nation that crossed the limits. Allah, the Exalted, has mentioned this in Surah Al-Hijr (76) and Surah As-Saffat (137).

35-1 That is, the traces of stones, which were rained upon them, the black foul-smelling water, and the overturned towns—all these are signs of lesson, but for whom? For the people of understanding.
35-2 Because only they reflect on matters, analyze causes and factors, and observe results and effects. But what concern do those who are devoid of intellect and consciousness have with these things? They are like animals being led to the slaughterhouse, but they are not even aware of it. In this, there is also an allusion to the polytheists of Makkah, that they too are displaying denial, which is the habit of people lacking intellect and wisdom.

35. And for people who use their reason, We have left a clear sign [53] of that town.
[53] The Nature of the Punishment:
The most severe punishment among all nations was inflicted upon this wretched people. First, the angels lifted the entire region on their wings. Then, after raising it high, they overturned it and hurled it down upon the earth. They struck it with such force that the whole region sank well below the surface of the earth. Then, stones were rained down upon this unfortunate people. And now, this entire area has come under water. The name of this sea is the Dead Sea, in whose depths this wicked nation was buried. And this incident is a sign in the sense that this area is located on the trade route that goes from Makkah to Syria, and the disbelievers of Makkah, both while coming and going on their trade journeys, could see with their own eyes what fate befell this disobedient, wicked, and rebellious nation.
