وَلَمَّآ أَن جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا سِىٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ ۖ إِنَّا مُنَجُّوكَ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ ﴿33﴾
And when Our Messengers came to Lût (Lot), he was grieved because of them, and felt straitened on their account. They said: "Have no fear, and do not grieve! Truly, we shall save you and your family, except your wife: she will be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed along with those who will be destroyed from her folk).
وَلَمَّآ walammā And when

33-1. Lut (علیہ السلام) considered those angels, who had come in human form, to be humans. He was afraid due to the evil habit and rebellion of his people that if they came to know about the arrival of these handsome guests, they would forcibly commit indecency, which would bring disgrace upon him, and because of this, he was saddened and inwardly distressed.

33-2. The angels observed the state of Lut’s (علیہ السلام) distress and sorrow, so they comforted him and said that he should have no fear or grief; they were angels sent by Allah. Their purpose was to save him and his household, except for his wife.

33. And when Our messengers (the angels) came to Lot [50], he was distressed by their arrival and felt uneasy for them. They said, "Do not fear or grieve. We will surely save you and your family, except your wife [51], who will be among those who stay behind."

The Anxiety of Lut (علیہ السلام) Upon Seeing the Angels:

The angels, after taking leave from Ibrahim (علیہ السلام), went straight to the house of Lut (علیہ السلام). Now, they did not come only in human form, but in the form of beardless, handsome young men. This appearance was attractive to the wicked people of the nation of Lut. Upon seeing them, Lut (علیہ السلام) felt great anxiety in his heart, fearing that these wicked people would treat them the same way they treated travelers, guests, and passersby. The angels immediately sensed this fear and danger in Lut (علیہ السلام) and said: There is no reason for you to be afraid or grieved. We are not humans but angels. We ourselves will deal with them. Some details have been omitted at this point, which are mentioned in other places.

The Coming of Punishment Upon the People of Lut:

Lut (علیہ السلام) was not a native resident of this area. Rather, he had migrated from Babylon with Ibrahim (علیہ السلام), first coming to Palestine, and then, by the order of Ibrahim (علیہ السلام), was sent here. However, his wife was the daughter of this wicked nation. Even the company of a prophet could not cleanse her of the tribalism and loyalty to her people and kin. She would side with her people instead of the prophet, and if any guest came to Lut (علیہ السلام), she would immediately inform her people. She was loyal to her kin rather than her husband and was their confidante. The angels said to Lut (علیہ السلام): Your prayer has been accepted; we have come to deliver you from this oppressive nation. So do this: take your family and believing companions with you and leave here during the night. And see, your wife will not go with you. And when you leave this town, do so in such a way that all your companions go ahead and you remain behind them, as if you are leading them away from this town. Also, make sure that none of you looks back, lest any part of the punishment should reach that person as well.
