أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ وَتَقْطَعُونَ ٱلسَّبِيلَ وَتَأْتُونَ فِى نَادِيكُمُ ٱلْمُنكَرَ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئْتِنَا بِعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ ﴿29﴾
"Verily, you practise sodomy with men, and rob the wayfarer (travellers)! And practise Al-Munkar (disbelief and polytheism and every kind of evil wicked deed) in your meetings." But his people gave no answer except that they said: "Bring Allâh’s Torment upon us if you are one of the truthful."
أَئِنَّكُمْ a-innakum Indeed, you

(Ayah 29) ➊ { اَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَاْتُوْنَ الرِّجَالَ وَ تَقْطَعُوْنَ السَّبِيْلَ:} By “قطع سبیل” (cutting off the way) is generally meant highway robbery and banditry, that is, you people snatch the belongings of travelers and kill them, or forcibly commit evil acts with them, or adopt any form of excess by which traveling becomes dangerous for people.
{وَ تَاْتُوْنَ فِيْ نَادِيْكُمُ الْمُنْكَرَ :} That is, you do acts of immorality and indecency not secretly but openly in your gatherings in front of each other. The same thing is stated in Surah An-Naml as follows: «{ اَتَاْتُوْنَ الْفَاحِشَةَ وَ اَنْتُمْ تُبْصِرُوْنَ [ النمل : ۵۴ ] “Do you indeed commit such immorality while you see (it happening) with your own eyes?”
{ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهٖۤ …:} Here, the response of their people is mentioned that they said, “Bring upon us the punishment of Allah if you are of the truthful.” And in Surah Al-A’raf and Surah An-Naml, their response is mentioned as, “Expel them from your town, for they are people who keep themselves pure.” Now, it is possible that at first, upon Lut (peace be upon him) advising them, they threatened to expel them from the town, and then, being fed up with his admonition, they demanded the punishment, or perhaps the order was the opposite. (And Allah knows best.) It is clear that they said both these things to Lut (peace be upon him).

29-1. That is, your lustfulness has reached such an extent that the natural way is insufficient for you, and you have adopted an unnatural method. For the satisfaction of sexual desire, Allah Almighty has established the natural way in the form of intercourse with wives. Abandoning this and using the anuses of men for this act is an unnatural method.

29-2. One meaning of this is that you forcibly seize passing travelers, newcomers, and passersby, and commit acts of indecency with them, making it difficult for people to pass through the roads. One meaning of "قطع طریق" is also "قطع نسل" (cutting off lineage), that is, instead of using the private parts of women, by using the anuses of men, you are also engaged in cutting off your own lineage (Fath al-Qadeer).

29-2. What was this indecency? There are also various opinions about this, for example: throwing stones at people, mocking and belittling foreign travelers, passing wind in gatherings, committing sodomy in front of each other, gambling games like chess, wearing dyed clothes, etc. Imam Shawkani says, it is not unlikely that they committed all these evils.

29-3. When Prophet Lut (علیہ السلام) forbade them from these evils, they replied.

29. Do you approach men (with lust), commit highway robbery [44], and practice evil deeds in your gatherings [45]? But his people had no answer except to say, "Bring upon us the punishment of Allah, if you are truthful." [46]

[44] ﴿تَقْطَعُوْنَ السَّبِيْلَ﴾ has two meanings; one is clear from the translation. These people did not only have the bad habit of pederasty, but they would also watch for travelers, then bring them into their town, commit sodomy with them, then snatch their belongings, cash, etc., and drive them out of their town. The second meaning is that they abandoned women and fulfilled their desires with men, thus cutting off the natural way of human reproduction.

The Misdeeds of the People of Lut:

That is, these people used to commit collective sodomy. For example, when a traveler or a handsome boy fell into their hands, they would take him to their camp, then one after another, in front of each other, commit sodomy with him. They felt no shame in this. In their gatherings, they would use extremely vulgar and shameless language with each other.

[46] This was the first response of these people. And the deniers of the truth usually give this answer because they consider the prophets and their message to be false, and they have no certainty about their warning of punishment. At this place, their same response is mentioned, and at another place, their second response is mentioned, which was: You consider yourselves pure and us filthy people, so what business do pure people have among filthy ones like us? Therefore, you should leave here and go somewhere else. And if you do not stop your preaching and admonition, then we will drive you out of our town.
