وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ سَبِيلَنَا وَلْنَحْمِلْ خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ وَمَا هُم بِحَـٰمِلِينَ مِنْ خَطَـٰيَـٰهُم مِّن شَىْءٍ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ﴿12﴾
And those who disbelieve say to those who believe: "Follow our way and we will verily bear your sins." Never will they bear anything of their sins. Surely, they are liars.
وَقَالَ waqāla And said
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve
لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ ittabiʿū Follow
سَبِيلَنَا sabīlanā our way
وَلْنَحْمِلْ walnaḥmil and we will carry
خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ khaṭāyākum your sins
وَمَا wamā But not
هُم hum they
بِحَـٰمِلِينَ biḥāmilīna (are) going to carry
مِنْ min of
خَطَـٰيَـٰهُم khaṭāyāhum their sins
مِّن min any
شَىْءٍ ۖ shayin thing
إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they
لَكَـٰذِبُونَ lakādhibūna (are) surely liars

(Ayah 12) ➊ {وَ قَالَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لِلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا … :} In this verse, another trial of the believers is mentioned: that the disbelievers try in every way to mislead them, just as the disbelievers at the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to the believers, "Follow our path, worship idols like us, and live a life according to your own desires—no obligation to do anything, nor any restriction from doing anything—and it is incumbent upon us to bear your sins." ({’’ وَ لْنَحْمِلْ ‘‘} The imperative form is used here for emphasis) meaning, "We will surely bear your sins," just as it is said, "You do this deed, your sin is on my neck."

{ وَ مَا هُمْ بِحٰمِلِيْنَ مِنْ خَطٰيٰهُمْ مِّنْ شَيْءٍ …:} Allah Almighty said that these disbelievers will not bear anything from their sins; indeed, they are lying. At that time, far from bearing their sins, they will become completely disassociated from their followers, as He said: «{ اِذْ تَبَرَّاَ الَّذِيْنَ اتُّبِعُوْا مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اتَّبَعُوْا وَ رَاَوُا الْعَذَابَ وَ تَقَطَّعَتْ بِهِمُ الْاَسْبَابُ [ البقرۃ : ۱۶۶ ] "When those who were followed will disassociate themselves completely from those who followed, and they will see the punishment, and all their ties will be cut off." Their not bearing the sins means that it is not possible in any way that on the Day of Resurrection they themselves bear the sins and thus absolve them of sin, and say, "You go to Paradise, we will bear the punishment for your sins," as He said elsewhere: «{ وَ لَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزْرَ اُخْرٰى وَ اِنْ تَدْعُ مُثْقَلَةٌ اِلٰى حِمْلِهَا لَا يُحْمَلْ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ وَّ لَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبٰى [ فاطر : ۱۸ ] "And no bearer of burden will bear the burden of another, and if a heavily laden soul calls to (another for) its load, nothing of it will be carried, even if he be a close relative."

12-1 That is, you should return to the ancestral religion on which we are still established, because that is the only true religion. If by practicing this traditional religion you become sinful, then we are responsible for it; we will bear that burden on our own necks.

12-2 Allah Almighty said they are lying. The Day of Resurrection will be such that no one will bear another's burden. There, even a friend will not care for another friend, even if there is a very deep friendship between them. Even relatives will not bear each other's burden. And here too, the bearing of this burden has been negated.

12. And the disbelievers say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will bear [20] your sins." But they will not bear anything of the sins of others [21]. Indeed, they are surely liars.

The Disbelievers Saying to the Muslims: "If You Return, We Will Bear Your Burden on the Day of Resurrection":

The polytheists of Makkah used to say this to the Muslims because they themselves did not believe in the establishment of the Hereafter. Nor did they have any sense that they would be questioned in the Hereafter, and then they would have to bear the burden of their own sins. On the other hand, they were also fond of their own religion and considered this polytheistic religion to be the truth. That is why they used to say to the Muslims that if you return to our religion, then according to your belief, we will bear the sin of your apostasy on the Day of Resurrection. In other words, they saw only benefit for themselves in such a compromise. That is, their demand for apostasy would be fulfilled immediately, and as for the promise they made in exchange, they themselves did not believe in it.

[21] One meaning of this is that it is an established principle that no person bears the burden of another's sin, nor can he bear it. Therefore, these people are uttering lies. And the second meaning is that when they see the punishment of Hell and realize their own fate, at that time they will never say that such-and-such person turned away from Islam at our word, so send him to Paradise and add his punishment to mine. In this respect as well, they are uttering lies.
