Verily, Allâh knows those who believe, and verily, He knows the hypocrites [i.e. Allâh will test the people with good and hard days to discriminate the good from the wicked, although Allâh knows all that before putting them to test].

1. This means that Allah will test by giving happiness and hardship so that the distinction between the hypocrite and the believer becomes clear. Whoever obeys Allah in both situations is a believer, and whoever obeys only in happiness and comfort, it means that he is only following his own desires, not Allah. As stated in another place: (وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْحَتّٰىنَعْلَمَالْمُجٰهِدِيْنَمِنْكُمْوَالصّٰبِرِيْنَ ۙ وَنَبْلُوَا۟اَخْبَارَكُمْ) (47:31) We will surely test you so that We may know who among you are the strivers and the patient, and We will test your other conditions as well. After the Battle of Uhud, in which the Muslims were put through the furnace of choice and trial, it was said: (مَاكَاناللّٰهُلِيَذَرَالْمُؤْمِنِيْنَعَلٰيمَآاَنْتُمْعَلَيْهِحَتّٰىيَمِيْزَالْخَبِيْثَمِنَالطَّيِّبِ) (3:179) Allah is not such that He would leave the believers in the state you are in until He separates the impure from the pure.

11. And Allah will surely make evident [19] those who believe and those who are hypocrites.
[19] Hardships and Tribulations in the Path of Truth are the Inheritance of the Prophets:
That is, Allah Almighty repeatedly creates such situations through which everyone comes to know the level of faith of each person—who are the ones with firm faith, who are weak in faith, and who are hypocrites. The reason is that this battle between truth and falsehood is not something temporary or fleeting, nor is it something whose results appear only in some battlefield. Here, it should be remembered that since the Prophets are the ones with the firmest faith, therefore, the greatest pains and difficulties fall to their share. Thus, the Prophet ﷺ said: «اَشدُّالْبَلَاءِعَلَيالأَنْبِيَاءِثُمَّالأَمْثَلْفَالْأَمْثَل» That is, the hardest hardships and tribulations befall the Prophets, then those with a lesser degree of faith, then those with a lesser degree than them. This means that a period of hardship does indeed come upon the people of faith; however, its standard is that the firmer a person's faith, the harder his trial will be. Incidentally, it is also understood from this that suffering in following the Shariah is the inheritance of the Prophets, and it is not necessary that this suffering comes only at the hands of disbelievers—it can also come from the polytheists, from the people of innovation and other misguided sects, and from the hypocrites as well. Therefore, blessed are those who are persecuted in the way of Allah—whether their honor is attacked or they suffer any loss of life or wealth, for them, all of it is a matter of pride.
