And how many a town (population) have We destroyed, which was thankless for its means of livelihood (disobeyed Allâh, and His Messengers, by doing evil deeds and crimes)! And those are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them except a little. And verily! We have been the inheritors.

(Ayah 58) ➊ The meaning of {وَكَمْاَهْلَكْنَامِنْقَرْيَةٍ …:’’ بَطَرٌ‘‘} is to become rebellious due to blessings, to become arrogant. It also means ingratitude and denial. If the first meaning is taken, then here {’’فِيْ‘‘} is omitted: due to the omission of the preposition {’’أَيْبَطِرَتْفِيْمَعِيْشَتِهَا۔‘‘}, {’’مَعِيْشَتَهَا‘‘} has become accusative. As is in Surah Al-A'raf (155): « وَاخْتَارَمُوْسٰىقَوْمَهٗسَبْعِيْنَرَجُلًا »{’’ أَيْمِنْقَوْمِهِ ‘‘}. This is the second answer to their excuse, that is, you have assumed that if you believe, you will be destroyed and ruined, and if you do not believe, your glory, leadership, honor, wealth, and highly developed economy will remain safe. So your assumption is wrong; how many nations before you, who became proud of their economy and whose inhabitants, due to their prosperity and affluence, became intoxicated, such as 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Lot, and the people of Shu'ayb, etc., We destroyed and ruined them in such a way that their towns are before you; there is such misfortune in them that after them, no one settled in them, except for a little, that a traveler, while passing by, stayed for a short while and then moved on. You should take a lesson from their end.
➋ { وَكُنَّانَحْنُالْوٰرِثِيْنَ :} means that none of them remained who could inherit their houses and wealth, He said: «{ فَهَلْتَرٰىلَهُمْمِّنْۢبَاقِيَةٍ }»[ الحآقۃ : ۸ ] "So do you see any remnant of them?" We became their heirs, and We are always the heirs of everything. In {’’ كُنَّا ‘‘}, {’’كَانَ‘‘} is for continuity and perpetuity.

58-1. The people of Makkah are being warned that do you not see what became of those who, after benefiting from Allah’s blessings, showed ingratitude and rebelliousness towards Allah? Today, most of their settlements have become ruins or their names remain only on the pages of history. Now, only passing travelers may rest in them for a while, if at all; due to their misfortune, no one prefers to live there permanently.
58-2. That is, none of them remained who could inherit those houses and wealth.

58. And how many towns We destroyed that exulted in their means of livelihood [80]. So here are their dwellings, deserted after them, except for a few. And We alone became their inheritors [81].
[80] This is the second answer to the objection of the disbelievers of Makkah, that is, your fear is that if you become Muslims, your political superiority and your economy will be destroyed, and the wealth upon which you are now boasting—those people who before you were proud of their wealth, their fate also awaits you. Those people, out of such arrogance, adopted the path of pride and rebellion. So Allah Almighty destroyed and ruined them in such a way that not even a trace of them remained. You keep seeing the ruins of their settlements. Then if you also adopt the ways of those people, what reason is there that your end should not be the same as theirs?
[81] The Second Answer to the Objection of the Disbelievers: Wealth Cannot Save from Punishment:
That is, those who boasted about their wealth and maintained a high standard of living perished, and the properties over which they used to be proud all remained right there. Not even an heir of theirs remained. In the end, We alone became their heirs, so that whomever We wish, We settle there and hand over those properties to them.
