Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
But We created generations [after generations i.e. after Mûsâ (Moses) عليه السلام], and long were the ages that passed over them. And you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) were not a dweller among the people of Madyan (Midian), reciting Our Verses to them. But it is We Who kept sending (Messengers).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 45) ➊ { وَلٰكِنَّاۤاَنْشَاْنَاقُرُوْنًافَتَطَاوَلَعَلَيْهِمُالْعُمُرُ:} That is, you were not present at that time, but from Moses (peace be upon him) until you, We created many generations and nations, upon whom passed hundreds and thousands of years of long duration. Because of this, the original events and the correct rulings of the religion did not remain in their original form, therefore it was necessary that through a new prophet, the religion and the law be presented in a correct, complete, and final form. That is why We honored you with prophethood and conveyed all these events to you through revelation. Or it means that due to the passage of long periods, the people of Arabia had completely forgotten about prophethood and messengership, so they are astonished at your prophethood and are not ready to accept it.
➋ {وَمَاكُنْتَثَاوِيًافِيْۤاَهْلِمَدْيَنَ … :} That is, the way you have described the events that happened to Moses (peace be upon him) when he went to "Madyan," with such accuracy and excellence, it appears as if you were residing there at that time, witnessing everything with your own eyes, or learning from them, and reciting Our verses to them just as you now recite to the people of Makkah. Whereas the reality is that you were not residing among the people of Madyan at that time, reciting Our verses to them. Some commentators have taken {’’ تَتْلُوْاعَلَيْهِمْاٰيٰتِنَا ‘‘} as a circumstantial qualifier and {’’ عَلَيْهِمْ ‘‘} to refer to the people of Makkah. In that case, the meaning would be that when you recite Our verses about Moses (peace be upon him) and that noble person before the people of Makkah, you were not residing among the people of Madyan, witnessing everything and then narrating it to them, rather all this has happened through Our revelation.
➌ { وَلٰكِنَّاكُنَّامُرْسِلِيْنَ:} But the fact is that We have always been sending prophets, who would awaken people from heedlessness and inform them of Our commands. Now, in accordance with this practice, We have sent you as a Messenger and revealed this final Book to you, so that after long periods have passed, people may once again become aware of the true religion and the original events.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
45-1. Quroon is the plural of qarn, meaning era, but here it is in the sense of nations, that is, O Muhammad ﷺ, between you and Musa (عليه السلام), during that period, We created many nations.
45-2. That is, by "days" is also meant that the laws and rulings changed, and people also forgot the religion, due to which they put aside Allah's commands and forgot their covenant, and thus it became necessary to send a new prophet. Or it means that due to the long passage of time, the Arabs had completely forgotten about prophethood and messengership, which is why they are astonished at your prophethood and are not ready to accept it.
45-3. By which you yourself would become aware of the details of this incident.
45-4. And on this same principle, We have sent you as a Messenger and are informing you of the previous conditions and events.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
But We raised up generations after them, and long years passed over them. Nor were you dwelling among the people of Midian, reciting Our verses to them, but We have been sending (you) as a Messenger.
[59] From the time of Musa (Moses) ؑ to the Prophetic era, there is a period of approximately two thousand years, and during this time about forty generations succeeded one another. But during this period, no prophet was sent to the land of Hijaz. After two thousand years, the last Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ, was sent to these people (the people of Hijaz).
[60] That is, despite not being a resident of Madyan, you are relating to these people the circumstances of Shu'ayb ؑ and Musa ؑ in such a way as if you were residing there at that time and used to recite Our verses to those people. And you were not only an eyewitness to these events, but practically involved in them as well. And since this is impossible, it is clear that Allah Almighty informed you of these circumstances through revelation. And this itself is proof of your prophethood.
