(Ayah 16) ➊ {قَالَرَبِّاِنِّيْظَلَمْتُنَفْسِيْفَاغْفِرْلِيْ …:} Although Musa (peace be upon him) did not kill intentionally, the status of prophets is very high, and even such carelessness is not appropriate for their rank. Therefore, Musa (peace be upon him) considered it a sin and sought forgiveness from Allah Almighty. Thus, Allah Almighty forgave him, but Musa (peace be upon him) remained remorseful even after that, and on the Day of Resurrection, when people will come to him and ask him to intercede with Allah Almighty, he will express his remorse in these words: [ إِنِّيْقَتَلْتُنَفْسًالَمْأُوْمَرْبِقَتْلِهَا ][ مسلم، الإیمان، باب أدنٰی أھل الجنۃ منزلۃ فیھا : ۱۹۴ ] "I killed a person whom I was not commanded to kill."
➋ It is evident from the statement of the Quran that this killing by Musa (peace be upon him) was unintentional, but the Bible declares Musa (peace be upon him) guilty of deliberate murder. Its narration is that "When Musa (peace be upon him) saw the Egyptian and the Israelite fighting, he looked this way and that, and when he saw that there was no one else there, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand." (Exodus: 2:12) This is among those distortions of the Jews which the Quran has corrected, as it is a guardian over all previous books.
➌ In the supplication of Musa (peace be upon him) {’’ فَاغْفِرْلِيْ ‘‘}, along with the request for forgiveness, the meaning of requesting concealment is also included. {’’مِغْفَرٌ ‘‘} refers to the helmet with which the head is covered in battle. Thus, Allah Almighty forgave Musa (peace be upon him) and also concealed this incident, and until the event that occurred the next day, no one knew who had committed the killing.

16-1 Although this accidental killing was not a major sin, because Allah protects His prophets from major sins, still it appeared to be such a sin for which much forgiveness was deemed necessary by him. Secondly, he feared that if Pharaoh came to know of it, he might kill him in retaliation.

He prayed: "My Lord! Indeed, I have wronged myself [26], so forgive me." So Allah forgave him. Surely, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
[26] Sayyiduna Musa’sؑ Prayer for Forgiveness After Accidental Killing:
It appears that the slain person was an old and weak man, and was already close to death. On top of that, with a single blow from a powerful man like Musa, his death occurred. Otherwise, under normal circumstances, even a blow from a strong man does not usually cause death. And the Copt was fighting on the basis that he belonged to the ruling nation. Now, when his death occurred at the hands of Musaؑ, it was, in any case, a crime of killing, but it happened unintentionally. For this crime of accidental killing, Musaؑ sought forgiveness from Allah Almighty. Thus, Allah Almighty forgave him for this crime. In this verse, the word ﴿غَفَرَ﴾ is used. And ﴿غَفَرَ﴾ means to forgive, as well as to cover, conceal, and hide. And ﴿مَغْفَرٌ﴾ refers to the helmet that soldiers wear on their heads during battle. And in these meanings, the use of this word is common. In this sense, the meaning of the prayer of Hazrat Musaؑ would be: O Allah! Cover up my crime or my mistake so that no one becomes aware of it. Lest this very matter could become a cause of sectarian provocation and a precursor to a great trial for the Children of Israel. And it is better that Musa’s prayer be understood in both meanings. Thus, in reality, Allah Almighty concealed Musa’sؑ mistake, and except for the Israelite whom he had helped, no one became aware of this incident.
