فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَـٰهَا مِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ ﴿57﴾
So We saved him and his family, except his wife. We destined her to be of those who remained behind.
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ fa-anjaynāhu So We saved him
وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ wa-ahlahu and his family
إِلَّا illā except
ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ im'ra-atahu his wife
قَدَّرْنَـٰهَا qaddarnāhā We destined her
مِنَ mina (to be) of
ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ l-ghābirīna those who remained behind

(Ayah 58,57) ➊ {فَاَنْجَيْنٰهُ وَ اَهْلَهٗۤ اِلَّا امْرَاَتَهٗ …:} For its details, see Surah Hud (81 to 83). In this surah, after Musa (peace be upon him), the circumstances of three prophets—Sulaiman, Salih, and Lut (peace be upon them)—are mentioned, and in their circumstances and those of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there is always some aspect of similarity. For example, Sulaiman (peace be upon him) sent a message to the Queen of Sheba that if you come in submission, it is better; otherwise, we will attack you with such an army that you will not be able to withstand. Accordingly, at the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought such an army against the polytheists of Makkah. Salih (peace be upon him) was attacked by his people in the form of a mob at night to kill him, but Allah Almighty saved him. The Quraysh of Makkah also tried to do the same to him (peace and blessings be upon him), but Allah Almighty saved him from their plot. The people of Lut (peace be upon him) threatened to expel him from the city, while the Quraysh of Makkah actually forced the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to leave the city. ➋ Abu Hayyan Andalusi said that from the story of Lut (peace be upon him), it comes to mind that throughout the Qur’an, only his forbidding of this indecency is mentioned, not the invitation to monotheism. The reason for this could be that they did not associate partners with Allah, but due to inventing this evil deed and denying their messenger, the punishment came upon them, as in Surah Ash-Shu'ara: «{ كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوْطٍ المُرْسَلِيْنَ [ الشعراء : ۱۶۰ ] “The people of Lut denied the messengers.” Or the reason could be that they were indeed polytheists, but when Lut (peace be upon him) saw that they had fallen into bestiality, even below that level, he considered it necessary to first invite them to the rank of humanity, then to the invitation of monotheism.
