وَجَدتُّهَا وَقَوْمَهَا يَسْجُدُونَ لِلشَّمْسِ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ فَصَدَّهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ فَهُمْ لَا يَهْتَدُونَ ﴿24﴾

"I found her and her people worshipping the sun instead of Allâh, and Shaitân (Satan) has made their deeds fair-seeming to them, and has barred them from (Allâh’s) Way: so they have no guidance."

وَجَدتُّهَا wajadttuhā And I found her
وَقَوْمَهَا waqawmahā and her people

(Ayah 24) {وَجَدْتُّهَا وَ قَوْمَهَا يَسْجُدُوْنَ لِلشَّمْسِ …:} That is, when every kind of blessing was available, it was necessary that they worship the One who granted these blessings and prostrate to Him alone. But I have seen that instead, she and her people prostrate to the sun, and Satan has made their deeds attractive to them and has prevented them from the right path; therefore, they do not receive guidance. That is, the reason for their not being guided is that Satan has adorned the worship of the sun in their eyes, so they consider themselves to be on the truth. Now, if a person walking on the wrong path becomes convinced that he is going the right way and becomes hostile to the one who points out his mistake, then he can never come to the straight path. By saying this, the hoopoe, as it were, drew the attention of Solomon (peace be upon him) towards waging jihad against this nation. Here, the act of making deeds attractive is attributed to Satan, because he makes sins appealing in the eyes of people. Elsewhere, the act of making deeds attractive for the disbelievers is attributed to Allah Almighty, as in verse (4) of this very surah, because the Creator of every action of the creation is Allah Almighty. Abraham (peace be upon him) addressed his people and said: «{وَ اللّٰهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَ مَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ }» [ الصافات : ۹۶ ] "Whereas Allah is the One who created you and also that which you do."

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

24-1. This means that just as birds have the awareness that even the prophets do not possess knowledge of the unseen, as the hoopoe said to Prophet Sulaiman (عليه السلام) that I have brought such important news of which you are also unaware, similarly, they also possess the sense and awareness of Allah’s oneness. That is why here the hoopoe, in a tone of astonishment and wonder, said that this queen and her people are worshippers of the sun instead of Allah and are following Satan, who has made the worship of the sun appear pleasing to them.

24. I found that she and her people prostrate to the sun instead of Allah, and Satan has made their deeds [25] attractive to them and has barred them from the (right) way, so they are not guided.

The Sun Worship of the People of Saba:

That is, these people are also sun worshippers and deniers of the Hereafter. Therefore, they devote all their efforts to earning as much wealth as possible and raising their standard of living. They consider this pursuit to be the ultimate purpose of their lives, and Satan has made them believe that the best use of their intellectual and mental faculties is to make their worldly life as splendid as possible.
