قَالُوا۟ وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ ﴿96﴾
They will say while contending therein,
قَالُوا۟ qālū They (will) say
وَهُمْ wahum while they
فِيهَا fīhā in it
يَخْتَصِمُونَ yakhtaṣimūna (are) disputing

(Ayah 96 to 98) ➊ {قَالُوْا وَ هُمْ فِيْهَا يَخْتَصِمُوْنَ …: ’’ اِنْ كُنَّا لَفِيْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ ‘‘} is actually { ’’إِنَّا كُنَّا لَفِيْ ضَلاَلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ‘‘ }. The proof of this is the "lam" that comes in { ’’ فِيْ‘‘ }. That is, while arguing with their deities in Hell, they will say: By Allah! We were certainly in clear misguidance, when we used to equate you with the Lord of the worlds, when we used to attribute some of His powers and attributes to you, when we believed you had the authority to declare things lawful and unlawful, when we considered you also as the Knower of the unseen and the Absolute Authority, when we thought you could fix problems, respond to pleas, grant children, and give healing.

➋ Remember, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) also forbade uttering such words that in any way express equality between the creation and the Creator. Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: [ لَا تَقُوْلُوْا مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ وَ شَاءَ فُلَانٌ وَلٰكِنْ قُوْلُوْا مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ ثُمَّ شَاءَ فُلَانٌ ] [ أبوداوٗد، الأدب، باب لا یقال خبثت نفسي : ۴۹۸۰، قال الألباني صحیح ] "Do not say: 'What Allah wills and so-and-so wills,' but rather say: 'What Allah wills, then so-and-so wills.'" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): [ مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ وَ شِئْتَ ] "Whatever Allah wills and you will." So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: [ جَعَلْتَ لِلّٰهِ نِدًّا ] "You have made a partner for Allah." Say instead: [ مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ ] "Whatever Allah alone wills."
