فَأَلْقَوْا۟ حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ ﴿44﴾

So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

بِعِزَّةِ biʿizzati By the might
فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun
إِنَّا innā indeed, we
لَنَحْنُ lanaḥnu surely, we
ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ l-ghālibūna (are) the victorious

(Ayah 44) { وَ قَالُوْا بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ … :} They swore by the honor of Pharaoh to show him respect, saying that we will surely win. The purpose of the magicians was to please Pharaoh and to intimidate Musa (peace be upon him). In the age of ignorance, people used to swear such oaths; in Islam, this has been prohibited. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ أَلاَ إِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوْا بِآبَائِكُمْ مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللّٰهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ ] [ بخاری، الأیمان والنذور، باب لا تحلفوا بآبائکم : ۶۶۴۶ ] "Beware! Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever has to swear, let him swear by Allah or remain silent." Despite this, nowadays some Muslims are not satisfied with swearing by Allah's essence or attributes, but rather swear by their spiritual guide or the grave of some saint, or according to common custom say, "I swear by you" or "I swear by your head," etc. In this way, they express the greatness of others. Just as swearing a false oath by Allah is a sin, swearing a true oath by the creation is an even greater sin.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. 44-1 As mentioned in Surah Al-A'raf and Ta-Ha, those magicians, in their own view, presented a very great magic, سحروا أعین الناس واسترھبوھم وجاؤا بسحر عظیم. Surah Al-A'raf. To the extent that even Musa (peace be upon him) felt fear in his heart, فاوجس فی نفسہ خیفۃ موسی. Ta-Ha. Thus, those magicians were very confident in their success and superiority, as is evident from these words here, but Allah Almighty reassured Musa (peace be upon him) that there was no need to worry. Just throw your staff on the ground and then see. So, as soon as the staff was thrown on the ground, it took the form of a terrifying serpent and swallowed up all those tricks one by one. So they threw down their ropes and staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh! Surely, we will be the victors [34]."

[34] The magicians were only told by Pharaoh’s officials that two magicians had come to the royal capital to see His Majesty. One of them throws down his staff and it turns into a snake, and this is their greatest trick, and His Majesty the King has summoned you people to compete with them. Therefore, they had prepared themselves specifically for this aspect. They threw down some of their staffs and some ropes, which appeared to the people as living, moving snakes. And their number was so great that the entire field of competition was filled with such snakes, and the whole crowd began to be terrified by this scene. Even Prophet Musa began to feel fear in his heart. This scene was very pleasing to the magicians, and they were convinced that no one could compete with their feat. Thus, in this joy, they shouted loudly, "Long live Pharaoh! Surely, we will win."
