قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُۥٓ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿34﴾
[Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.
قَالَ qāla He said
لِلْمَلَإِ lil'mala-i to the chiefs
حَوْلَهُۥٓ ḥawlahu around him
إِنَّ inna Indeed
هَـٰذَا hādhā this
لَسَـٰحِرٌ lasāḥirun (is) surely a magician
عَلِيمٌۭ ʿalīmun learned

(Ayah 35,34) {قَالَ لِلْمَلَاِ حَوْلَهٗۤ … :} Just now he was making claims of divinity, and now he has come down to asking his ministers and courtiers, "Tell me, what should be done? How can this calamity be averted?" He adopted this attitude after seeing the sun of his power setting. Here, it is mentioned that Pharaoh said this, whereas in Surah Al-A'raf (109, 110), it is stated that Pharaoh's chiefs said this. The reality is that Pharaoh said this, and his chiefs repeated the same thing.
