لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿3﴾
It may be that you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your Risalah (Messengership) i.e. in your Message of Islâmic Monotheism].
لَعَلَّكَ laʿallaka Perhaps you
بَـٰخِعٌۭ bākhiʿun (would) kill
نَّفْسَكَ nafsaka yourself
أَلَّا allā that not
يَكُونُوا۟ yakūnū they become
مُؤْمِنِينَ mu'minīna believers

(Ayah 3) {لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ …:} The purpose here is to console the Prophet (peace be upon him) that you should not be so grieved over the misfortune of these people not believing; there is no greater miracle than the Qur’an, and you have shown it to them. 3. (O Prophet!) Perhaps you would destroy yourself with grief [2] because they do not believe.

The Reasons for Your Distress Over the Disbelief of the Disbelievers:

It was your utmost desire that the disbelievers of Makkah embrace faith, and when instead of believing they adopted a hostile attitude, you would feel intense grief. There were several reasons for this. One was that you possessed extremely compassionate and sympathetic feelings for the creation of Allah. You knew that these people, by opposing you, were destined to become fuel for Hell. Therefore, their opposition caused you deep sorrow. The second reason was natural: when a person puts all his efforts into a task and sees no positive result, he becomes disappointed and deeply distressed. The third reason, in which other Muslims were also included, was that if these people had accepted Islam, Islam would have gained considerable strength. Otherwise, the sufferings and difficulties of the Muslims were only increasing. Due to these reasons, you remained deeply saddened and grieved at the disbelievers’ rejection. In this verse, Allah Almighty consoled you by saying that you should not grieve yourself to death over their not believing. Guiding them to the right path is not your responsibility, and what is your responsibility, you are already fulfilling. Leave them to their own state; dealing with them is My task. You just continue doing your work.
