Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 214) {وَ اَنْذِرْ عَشِيْرَتَكَ الْاَقْرَبِيْنَ:} And warn your closest relatives of Allah’s punishment, that they should not rely on my kinship. The command to warn the closest relatives makes it clear that those other than them must be warned even more so, and when in warning the closest relatives, their dislike or displeasure is not to be considered, then the displeasure or dislike of others is a minor matter in comparison. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fulfilled this duty as it deserved. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that when the verse: «{ وَ اَنْذِرْ عَشِيْرَتَكَ الْاَقْرَبِيْنَ was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed Mount Safa and began to call out: [ يَا بَنِيْ فِهْرٍ! : ۴۷۷۰ ] “O sons of Fihr! O sons of Adi!” He called out to the various tribes of Quraysh until they gathered; if a man could not come himself, he would send someone else to see what the matter was. Thus, Abu Lahab and the Quraysh all came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Tell me, if I were to inform you that an army is about to attack you from this valley, would you believe me?” They said: “Yes! We have only experienced truthfulness from you.” He said: “Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment.” So Abu Lahab said: “May you perish for the whole day! Did you gather us for this?” Upon this, this Surah was revealed: «{ تَبَّتْ يَدَاۤ اَبِيْ لَهَبٍ وَّ تَبَّ (1) مَاۤ اَغْنٰى عَنْهُ مَالُهٗ وَ مَا كَسَبَ [ اللھب : ۱، ۲ ]

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : ۳۵۲۷ ] “O sons of Abd Manaf! Ransom yourselves from Allah. O sons of Abd al-Muttalib! Ransom yourselves from Allah. O mother of Zubair ibn al-Awwam and the Prophet’s aunt (Safiyyah)! O Fatimah bint Muhammad! Both of you ransom yourselves from Allah. I have no power to benefit you before Allah. Ask me for whatever you want from my wealth.” In another narration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also addressed the Quraysh and his uncle Abbas. 214-1. The invitation of a prophet is not only for relatives, but for the entire nation, and the Prophet ﷺ came as a guide and leader for the whole of humanity. Inviting close relatives to faith is not contrary to the general invitation, rather it is a part of it or its preferential aspect. Just as Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) first invited his father Azar to monotheism. After this command, the Prophet ﷺ climbed Mount Safa and called out "یَا صَبَاحَا". This phrase is used when an enemy suddenly attacks, and through it, the nation is warned. Hearing this phrase, people gathered; the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the names of various tribes of Quraysh and said, "Tell me, if I were to say that there is an enemy army behind this mountain about to attack you, would you believe me?" All said, "Yes, certainly we would believe." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah has sent me as a warner, I warn you of a severe punishment." Upon this, Abu Lahab said, "May you perish! Did you call us for this?" In response, Surah Tabat was revealed (Sahih Bukhari). The Prophet ﷺ also said to his daughter Fatimah and his aunt Safiyyah, "Make arrangements for your salvation with Allah, I will not be able to help you there."

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

214. And warn your closest family members [127] (of the terrible end).

[127]
The First Invitation to the Quraysh:

After your ﷺ prophethood, for three years you continued to fulfill the duty of preaching in a very secret manner at Dar al-Arqam. Later, this command was revealed that you should now openly invite your close relatives to abstain from shirk and warn them of the consequences of shirk. The way you acted upon this verse is made clear by the following hadiths: Hazrat Ibn Abbas ؓ says that when this verse was revealed, you ﷺ went out and climbed Mount Safa and began to call out: "O descendants of Fihr, O descendants of Adi," and thus called all the clans of Quraysh. They gathered; whoever could not come himself sent someone on his behalf to see what the matter was. Abu Lahab himself came and other people of Quraysh also arrived. You ﷺ asked them: "If I were to tell you that horsemen are gathering on the other side of this valley to attack you, would you believe me?" They said, "Certainly! For we have always found you truthful." Then you ﷺ said: "I warn you of a severe punishment that is to befall you (on the Day of Resurrection)." At this, Abu Lahab said: "May you perish for the rest of the day! Did you gather us for this?" At that moment, this surah was revealed: ﴿تَبَّتْ يَدَآ اَبِيْ لَهَبٍ وَّتَبَّ ...﴾ [بخاري۔ كتاب تفسير]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah ؓ states that when this verse was revealed, you ﷺ stood up and began to say: "O people of Quraysh! (or something similar) Save yourselves! I will not be able to do anything for you before Allah. O Banu Abd Manaf! I will not be able to do anything for you before Allah. O my aunt Safiyyah! I will not be able to do anything for you before Allah. O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad ﷺ! Ask me for whatever you want from my wealth, but before Allah, I will not be able to do anything for you."
