Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 123 to 127) ➊ { كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ المُرْسَلِيْنَ …:} In the stories of Noah (peace be upon him) and the four prophets (peace be upon them) after him, it is especially evident from the command of piety and obedience and the negation of any kind of reward for preaching the message that the fundamental purpose of the prophets’ sending is to command the recognition of Allah, His oneness, and obedience to His messengers, and that the prophets (peace be upon them) are free from worldly greed.

➋ The initial verses of this story and the story of Noah (peace be upon him) are similar, so there is no need to repeat their explanation. For comparison, see Surah Al-A’raf (65 to 72) and Hud (50 to 60). Further details are also found at these places: Surah Ha Mim As-Sajdah (13 to 16), Al-Ahqaf (21 to 26), Adh-Dhariyat (41 to 45), Al-Qamar (18 to 22), and Surah Al-Fajr (6 to 8). The dwelling place of the people of ‘Ad was near Hadramaut, at the place now called “Al-Rub‘ Al-Khali.” See Surah Al-A’raf (65).

{ اِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ اَخُوْهُمْ هُوْدٌ …:} To understand the speech of Hud (peace be upon him), it is necessary to keep in mind the basic information about this nation that is mentioned in various places in the Noble Qur’an. According to these, after the destruction of the people of Noah, this nation was granted ascendancy. (Al-A’raf: 69) Physically, these people were very robust and powerful. (Al-A’raf: 69; Al-Haqqah: 7) No nation like them was ever created. (Al-Fajr: 8) They were highly developed; due to building lofty buildings with tall pillars, they were famous as “the people of the pillars.” (Al-Fajr: 6, 7) Because of material progress and physical strength, they were extremely arrogant and did not consider anyone more powerful than themselves. (Ha Mim As-Sajdah: 15) Their political system was in the hands of great rebellious tyrants. (Hud: 59) Religiously, they were not deniers of Allah Almighty but were polytheists; they were not willing to accept one Allah as the only deity. (Al-A’raf: 70)

1. ‘Aad was the name of their forefather, after whom the nation was named. Here, ‘Aad is considered as a tribe, so the verb كَذَّبَتْ (feminine form) has been used.

The people of 'Aad [82] also denied the messengers.

[82] After the people of Nuh, the nation that gained renown and prominence in the world was this very nation of 'Ad, which is also called 'Ad-e-Ula. This nation did believe in the existence of Allah Almighty, but was deeply involved in shirk. Their original homeland was Ahqaf. This nation was tall, strong, and rebellious. Allah Almighty sent Hud ؑ to them. The period of this nation's rise was approximately two and a half thousand years before Christ.
