Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 38) ➊ {وَ عَادًا وَّ ثَمُوْدَاۡ وَ اَصْحٰبَ الرَّسِّ :} Noah (peace be upon him) is the first prophet whose nation was drowned because they denied him, and Moses (peace be upon him) is the last of these prophets upon whom, due to not believing, Pharaoh and his people were drowned. In this verse, there is mention of those people in between who were destroyed by means other than water. The meaning of {’’ الرَّسِّ ‘‘} is "well," and its plural is {’’رِسَاسٌ‘‘}. Ibn Jarir said: "In the speech of the Arabs, {’’ الرَّسِّ ‘‘} refers to any dug place, such as a well or a grave, etc." Therefore, some have taken this to mean "the people of the trench (Ashab al-Ukhdud)" as well. Shanqiti said: "The story of 'Ad and Thamud has come in many verses of the Qur'an; as for {’’اَصْحٰبَ الرَّسِّ ‘‘}, neither the details of their story nor the name of their prophet has come in the Qur'an." There are many statements of the commentators about them, all of which are without evidence, so we have not mentioned them. {’’ الرَّسِّ ‘‘} is also the name of a valley, which Zuhair has mentioned in his Mu'allaqah:
{بَكَرْنَ بُكُوْرًا وَاسْتَحَرْنَ بِسُحْرَةٍ ¤ فَهُنَّ لِوَادِي الرَّسِّ كَالْيَدِ لِلْفَمِ }
{ وَ قُرُوْنًۢا بَيْنَ ذٰلِكَ كَثِيْرًا:’’ قَرْنٌ‘‘} are people of an era who continued to meet one another, and by {’’فَهُوَ مِنَ الْاِقْتِرَانِ۔‘‘ ’’بَيْنَ ذٰلِكَ ‘‘} (in between) is meant the time between Noah and Moses (peace be upon them) or the time between 'Ad and Thamud and the people of the well. Elsewhere, regarding their abundance, it is said: «{ اَلَمْ يَاْتِكُمْ نَبَؤُا الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ قَوْمِ نُوْحٍ وَّ عَادٍ وَّ ثَمُوْدَ وَ الَّذِيْنَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهِمْ لَا يَعْلَمُهُمْ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ [ إبراہیم : ۹ ] "Has there not come to you the news of those before you, the people of Noah and 'Ad and Thamud and those after them, whom none knows except Allah?" And it is said: «{ وَ كَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنَ الْقُرُوْنِ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ نُوْحٍ [ بني إسرائیل : ۱۷ ] "And We destroyed how many generations after Noah." From this, it is known that the counting of ancestors and years between Noah and Moses (peace be upon them) based on the Bible and so on is not reliable, nor is there any certain knowledge of the duration of the world. The statements of scientists are also based merely on conjecture and estimation.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

38-1. The meaning of رس is "well." اَصْحَاب الرَّس means "the people of the well." There is a difference of opinion among the commentators regarding its identification. Imam Ibn Jarir Tabari said that by this is meant the أصحاب الأخدود whose mention is in Surah Al-Buruj (Ibn Kathir).

38-2. The correct meaning of قرن is "a group of contemporaries." When the people of one generation perish, the next generation is called the subsequent era. (Ibn Kathir) Its meaning can also be that the community of each prophet can be considered an era.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

38. And (similarly) the people of ‘Ad, Thamud, the people of the well [50], and many generations in between (were destroyed).

Who are the People of the Well (Ashab ar-Rass)?

The mention of the people of ‘Ad and Thamud is found in many places in the Quran, but the mention of the People of the Well (Ashab ar-Rass), appears only in two places: here and in Surah Qaf, verse 12. In these places, their mention is so brief that it sheds little light on their circumstances. Nor is it known which prophet was sent to them. Linguistically, "rass" refers to a large well in which there is an abundant amount of water. For this reason, there are various differences among the commentators regarding the People of the Well. The most well-known opinion is that it refers to the people of Antioch. A prophet named Habib Najjar was sent to them, but they denied him, although he continued to convey Allah’s message to them. Eventually, these people killed him and threw him into the well. For this reason, they became known by the title "People of the Well." Then Allah caused that well and the entire settlement to sink into the earth. ﴿والله اعلم بالصواب﴾
