قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ﴿82﴾
They said: "When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected indeed?
قَالُوٓا۟ qālū They said
أَءِذَا a-idhā What! When
مِتْنَا mit'nā we are dead
وَكُنَّا wakunnā and become
تُرَابًۭا turāban dust
وَعِظَـٰمًا waʿiẓāman and bones
أَءِنَّا a-innā would we
لَمَبْعُوثُونَ lamabʿūthūna surely be resurrected

82. They say: "When we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be raised up again?" [82]

[82] When the Bedouins would ask the disbelievers of Makkah about the Prophet who has arisen among them and what his teachings are, they would reply that there is nothing new in it; it is just the old tales and stories of the ancients that we have been hearing before as well. And they would say this because the fundamental and principal teachings of the Prophets have always been the same. In response to them, Allah Almighty said that they themselves are saying to their Prophet the very same thing that their forefathers used to say in opposition to the Prophets: "When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised up again?" They themselves are repeating the same old, worn-out statement. They do not have any new answer with proof. Then, is not their own statement itself an old tale, which is uttered merely as a blind following of their forefathers?
