O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibât [all kinds of Halâl foods which Allâh has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.] and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do.

(Ayah 51) ➊ { يٰۤاَيُّهَاالرُّسُلُكُلُوْامِنَالطَّيِّبٰتِ …:} Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Allah Almighty is commanding all the messengers to eat what is lawful and to do righteous deeds. From this, it is understood that eating what is lawful helps in performing righteous deeds.” (Ibn Kathir) Obviously, one must also work hard to obtain what is lawful. Thus, before prophethood, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) herded goats for wages and also engaged in trade, and in the end, Allah Almighty enriched him with the purest sustenance through war booty, so it was said: « فَكُلُوْامِمَّاغَنِمْتُمْحَلٰلًاطَيِّبًا »[ الأنفال : ۶۹ ] “So eat from what you have obtained as booty, while it is lawful and good.” Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَاأَكَلَأَحَدٌطَعَامًاقَطُّخَيْرًامِنْأَنْيَّأْكُلَمِنْعَمَلِيَدِهِوَإِنَّنَبِيَّاللّٰهِدَاوٗدَعَلَيْهِالسَّلَامُكَانَيَأْكُلُمِنْعَمَلِيَدِهِ ][ بخاري، البیوع، باب کسب الرجل و عملہ بیدہ : ۲۰۷۲ ] “No one has ever eaten food better than that which he earned with his own hands, and Allah’s Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) used to eat from what he earned with his own hands.” And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ كَانَزَكَرِيَّانَجَّارًا ][ ابن ماجہ، التجارات، باب الصناعات : ۲۱۵۰، عن أبي ھریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ و صححہ الألباني ] “Zakariya (peace be upon him) was a carpenter.” For further details and regarding the supplication of one who eats what is unlawful not being accepted, see Surah Al-Baqarah (172).
This verse also refutes monasticism, those who make Allah’s blessings unlawful upon themselves. After mentioning Isa (peace be upon him), perhaps this command is mentioned for this reason, that monasticism was never prescribed for any messenger.
➋ { إِنِّيْبِمَاتَعْمَلُوْنَعَلِيْمٌ:} In this, there is a promise of reward for eating what is lawful and doing righteous deeds, and a warning of punishment for the opposite.

51-1 By طِیِّبٰت is meant pure and delightful things; some have translated it as lawful things. Both are correct in their own place because every pure thing Allah has made lawful, and every lawful thing is pure and delightful. Allah has forbidden خبائث because, in terms of effects and results, they are not pure. The emphasis on righteous deeds along with lawful sustenance shows that there is a deep connection between them and they assist each other. That is why Allah commanded both these things to all the prophets. Thus, all the prophets made arrangements to earn and eat lawful sustenance through hard work, just as it is mentioned about Dawud (علیہ السلام) that he used to eat from what he earned with his own hands, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every prophet has tended sheep; I too used to tend the sheep of the people of Makkah for a few coins." O messengers [53]! Eat of the good things [54] and do righteous deeds. Surely, I am well aware of what you do [55].
[53] This manner of address is not because all the messengers were gathered in one place and thus addressed in this way. Rather, it is because the fundamental teachings of all the messengers have been the same. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, a collective style of address has been adopted here. Also, although in this verse the address is to the messengers, the command is general. And in some places, the Noble Quran has given the command to eat lawful and pure things by saying ﴿يٰاايُّهَاالنَّاس﴾, and in some places, the believers are the ones addressed with this command. [54] The Command to the Messengers to Eat Pure Things:
By pure things are meant those things whose consumption has been declared lawful by the Shariah and which have been obtained through lawful means only. To understand this, consider that a chicken is, in itself, a lawful thing, but if it is stolen, it becomes unlawful. Similarly, wealth obtained through interest or other unlawful means will be considered unlawful wealth.
The Importance of Lawful Earning:
Lawful earning and abstaining from the unlawful is such an important command that Allah Almighty has mentioned it before righteous deeds. This means that if someone’s earnings are unlawful, even their righteous deeds are not accepted. In this regard, under verse 168 of Surah Al-Baqarah, we have already mentioned eight hadiths, which would be beneficial to review again so that the full importance of this important legal command may be understood. [55] That is, if someone has mixed unlawful with lawful earnings, I know it well, and I also know how much of your deeds contained sincerity and the pleasure of Allah. This meaning will apply when the address is understood to be directed at common people or believers, because any kind of disobedience is not denied for the prophets. And if the address is understood to be directed at the prophets, then the meaning will be that I know well to what extent you fulfilled the duty of conveying the message.
