(Ayah 36){ هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ : ’’ هَيْهَاتَ ‘‘} is a mabni, jamid, non-derived noun. Most commentators say that it is in the meaning of the past tense verb {’’بَعُدَ‘‘} (became distant). {’’مَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ‘‘} is its subject, and the laam is for clarification and explanation of the subject. The meaning will be: "Far, far is that which you are promised." Zajjaj has stated in his tafsir, and Zamakhshari has also indicated preference for this view, that this is a verbal noun in the meaning of {’’بُعْدٌ‘‘} (distance). The meaning will then be: "Distance, distance is for that which you are promised." In this case, there is no difficulty in understanding the meaning of the laam, and I have translated accordingly. The point is that after becoming dust and bones, the matter of being resurrected alive from the graves again is very far-fetched.
