The Highest Rank of Paradise: Jannat al-Firdaws:
Firdaws means a lush green valley (Munjid) and also a garden situated by a river in which every kind of fruit and flower is present (Muntaha al-Arab). Thus, Jannat al-Firdaws refers to that part of Paradise in which there are abundant lush trees with dense and cool shade. It is fragrant with the scent of flowers and contains every kind of fruit in abundance. And Jannat al-Firdaws will be the highest level and exactly in the center of Paradise. As is clear from the following hadith: Hazrat Anas bin Malik ؓ says that Rabi’ bint Nadr’s son, Harithah bin Suraqah, was martyred on the day of Badr by a mysterious arrow. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “Tell me about Harithah’s condition. If he has attained goodness, I will hope for reward and be patient, and if not, I will continue to pray for him.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “O Umm Harithah! There are many gardens in Paradise, and your son has entered Firdaws al-A‘la, which is the highest and central place in Paradise.” [ترمذي۔ ابواب التفسير]
For this very Paradise, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught the Muslims this supplication: ﴿اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِيْ اَسْئَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ الْفِرْدُوْسَ﴾ He also said that when you ask Allah, ask for Jannat al-Firdaws. The condition of the Muslims at the time of the revelation of the above verses, and the supplication the Prophet ﷺ made for the Muslims upon their revelation, is fully illustrated by the following hadith:
Hazrat Umar ؓ says that when revelation would descend upon the Prophet ﷺ, a sound like the buzzing of bees would be heard around his face. One day, revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ, and shortly after, he turned his face towards the Qiblah, raised both hands, and prayed: “O Allah! Increase us, do not let us remain few; grant us honor, do not let us remain humiliated; give to us, do not deprive us; prefer us over others, do not let others be preferred over us; make us pleased and be pleased with us!” After this supplication, the Prophet ﷺ said: Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever acts upon them will enter Paradise. Then the Prophet ﷺ recited ten verses from ﴿قَدْ اَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ﴾. [ترمذي۔ كتاب التفسير]
