Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 109) ➊ From the word { اِنَّهٗكَانَفَرِيْقٌمِّنْعِبَادِيْ … : ’’ فَرِيْقٌ ‘‘}, it is understood that those servants of Allah were a group completely separate from the disbelievers and their beliefs and actions. The purpose of this statement is to inform the disbelievers about their treatment of the believers in this world and the current state of the believers, so as to instill regret and sorrow in them. ➋ { رَبَّنَاۤاٰمَنَّافَاغْفِرْلَنَاوَارْحَمْنَا:} Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: [ أَيُّالْعَمَلِأَفْضَلُ؟قَالَإِيْمَانٌبِاللّٰهِوَرَسُوْلِهِ ][ بخاري، الإیمان، باب من قال إن الإیمان ھو العمل : ۲۶ ] "Which deed is the best?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "To have faith in Allah and His Messenger." That is, a group among My servants used to supplicate to Me by presenting the deed of having faith in Me and My Messenger as a means. From this, it is established to present one’s sincere deed as a means at the time of supplication. See the exegesis of { اِيَّاكَنَعْبُدُوَاِيَّاكَنَسْتَعِيْنُ } and the exegesis of Surah Al-Imran, Ayah (193). ➌ The meaning of { فَاغْفِرْلَنَاوَارْحَمْنَا : ’’غَفَرَ‘‘} is to cover. {’’اَلْمِغْفَرُ‘‘} refers to a helmet, which is made of iron and serves as a covering against the enemy’s strike, meaning: O our Lord! We have believed in You and Your Messenger, so cover our sins and slips with such a covering that even in the records of the noble scribes it is not visible, and have mercy on us. ➍ Here, Baqa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) has explained the point of the conjunction "waaw" (و) (and he has explained a point at almost every such place according to the context, which is very delightful for people of taste). He says that the meaning of "waaw" is that before {’’اَنْتَخَيْرُالرّٰحِمِيْنَ ‘‘} there is a sentence to which {’’ اَنْتَخَيْرُالرّٰحِمِيْنَ ‘‘} is conjoined. In relation to {’’ فَاغْفِرْلَنَاوَارْحَمْنَا ‘‘}, the entire statement is as follows: {’’ فَأَنْتَخَيْرُالْغَافِرِيْنَوَأَنْتَخَيْرُالرَّاحِمِيْنَ ۔‘‘} Since the matter is clarified by the conjunction "waaw," {’’ أَنْتَخَيْرُالْغَافِرِيْنَ ‘‘} has been omitted, because the established rule is: {’’خَيْرُالْكَلَامِمَاقَلَّوَدَلَّ‘‘} that the best speech is that in which words are few and it is well-argued.
