Surah Al-Hajj (22) — Ayah 9

ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِۦ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ لَهُۥ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا خِزْىٌ ۖ وَنُذِيقُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ عَذَابَ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ﴿9﴾
Bending his neck in pride (far astray from the Path of Allâh), and leading (others) too (far) astray from the Path of Allâh. For him there is disgrace in this worldly life, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall make him taste the torment of burning (Fire).
ثَانِىَ thāniya Twisting
عِطْفِهِۦ ʿiṭ'fihi his neck
لِيُضِلَّ liyuḍilla to mislead
عَن ʿan from

9. 1. Thani is an active participle, meaning "the one who turns." "Atf" means "side." This is a circumstantial qualifier from "yujadil." In this, the condition of the person is described who argues about Allah without any rational or transmitted proof, that he, with arrogance and aversion, turns his neck and walks about, just as in other places this condition is mentioned in these words: (وَلّٰى مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَاَنْ لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا) 31. Luqman:7) (لَوَّوْا رُءُوْسَهُمْ) 63. Al-Munafiqun:5) (اَعْرَضَ وَنَاٰ بِجَانِبِهٖ) 17. Al-Isra:83)
