(Ayah 19 to 21) ➊ At the command of Allah, Musa (peace be upon him) threw down his staff, and suddenly it became a snake that was running, meaning it was a real and living snake. In the Noble Qur’an, three words have been used for it: {’’ حَيَّةٌ ‘‘} (snake), {’’ جَاۤنٌّ ‘‘} (a thin, rod-like, shining snake), and {’’ ثُعْبَانٌ ‘‘ } (a very large serpent). It is understood that as soon as the staff was thrown, it became like a thin snake, then as it grew, it became a very large serpent. Musa (peace be upon him) became frightened and instinctively ran away and did not even look back. See Surah An-Naml (10) and Al-Qasas (31). Allah said, “Seize it and do not fear; We will return it to its former state.”
➋ The scholars have mentioned several wisdoms in the staff becoming a snake in a moment and then returning to a staff again. One of them is that Allah granted him, like his forefather Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the certainty of His power with the eye of certainty, that by His command, a lifeless thing becomes so dangerous that nothing can stand before it, and then how such a dangerous thing, by His command, becomes a lifeless piece of wood that cannot even move. The purpose was to instill this certainty that Pharaoh, with all his tyranny, is nothing before the command of Allah. The second wisdom is that at that time, magic was at its peak, so this miracle was given to counter it, and he was also made to witness it, so that when the staff became a snake in the field, Musa (peace be upon him) would not become frightened and run away, but after seeing it with his own eyes, he would always be aware of the strength granted by Allah. The third wisdom, written by Buqā‘ī (may Allah have mercy on him) in the context of the connection of the verses, is that before the beginning of the incident of Musa (peace be upon him), Allah mentioned the coming of the Hour, which is called {’’اَلسَّاعَةُ‘‘}, meaning a moment, an instant. After mentioning the Hour, Musa (peace be upon him) was made to witness the staff becoming a snake and the snake becoming a staff in a moment, thus showing the establishment of the Hour in an instant.
