فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَن لَّا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ فَتَرْدَىٰ ﴿16﴾

"Therefore, let not the one who believes not therein (i.e. in the Day of Resurrection, Reckoning, Paradise and Hell.), but follows his own lusts, divert you therefrom, lest you perish.

(Ayah 16){فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا …:} Among the benefits derived from this verse, one benefit in the words of the commentator Zamakhshari is: "Those who do not believe in the Hereafter are a huge multitude, because for the disbelievers, nothing is more difficult than accepting the Day of Judgment, nor do they deny anything more than this. So never let the abundance of calamities coming from their side and their great numbers frighten you, nor let their multitude cause your steps to slip. Remember that however numerous they may be, they are only following their own desires, not any evidence or proof, and in this is a great encouragement that knowledge of evidence and following it is necessary, and it is extremely important to avoid blind following, because the end of blind following and its people is destruction." The second benefit is that it is necessary to avoid the gatherings of worldly people, especially the disbelievers, and to refrain from gentleness and compromise with them. Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: "Do not let it prevent you"—meaning from believing in the Day of Judgment or from prayer. When Allah Almighty forbade Musa (peace be upon him) from the company of the wicked, then what about anyone else?" (Mawduh)

16. 1. Because avoiding belief in the Hereafter or avoiding its remembrance and contemplation, both are causes of destruction.

16. So let not one who does not believe in it and follows his own desires [12] turn you away from it, lest you perish.

[12] And the fifth point is that the person who does not believe in the Day of Resurrection and whose mind is devoid of the concept of accountability before Allah, becomes a slave to his own desires. He becomes so absorbed in the interests and allurements of the world that he never remembers Allah, not even by mistake. Therefore, you should avoid the company of such people. Otherwise, they might drag you down along with themselves. These were the fundamental teachings that were conveyed to Sayyiduna Musa ؑ at the very beginning of his prophethood, and this fifth instruction was given especially because you were about to take Allah’s message to a tyrannical, rebellious, and worldly ruler, and for this task, such steadfastness and perseverance were needed as are necessary for the establishment of the religion.
