نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًا ﴿104﴾
We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: "You stayed no longer than a day!"
نَّحْنُ naḥnu We

(Ayah 104) {نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُوْلُوْنَ …: ’’اَمْثَلُ‘‘} means {’’أَفْضَلُ‘‘}. {’’ اَلْمَثَالَةُ ‘‘} that is, {’’ اَلْفَضْلُ۔‘‘ ’’ طَرِيْقَةً ‘‘} by "the one with the best way" here is meant the one with the best opinion. He is called the one with a better opinion and more intelligent because he understood the temporary and perishable nature of the world and the everlasting and eternal nature of the Hereafter better than others, so he said, "Ten nights? You did not stay in the world more than a single day." Tabari said that the terror of the Day of Judgment will make them forget the pleasures and luxuries of the world to such an extent that they will not even be able to tell the correct duration of their stay in the world. 14. 1. That is, the most intelligent and wise. That is, the life of this world will seem to them to be only a few days, rather just a few moments. Just as in another place Allah Almighty has said (وَيَوْمَ تَــقُوْمُ السَّاعَةُ يُـقْسِمُ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ ڏ مَا لَبِثُوْا غَيْرَ سَاعَةٍ ۭ كَذٰلِكَ كَانُوْا يُؤْفَكُوْنَ) 30. Ar-Rum. 55) On the Day when the Hour will be established, the disbelievers will swear that they did not remain (in the world) except for an hour. This same subject has been mentioned in several other places as well. For example, Surah Fatir, 37; Surah Al-Mu’minun, 112-114; Surah An-Nazi’at, etc. The meaning is that the perishable life should not be preferred over the everlasting life.

We know best what they will say, when the most reasonable among them [73] will say, "You only stayed (in the world) for a day."

[73] Here, the "staying" can refer to the life of this world or the life of Barzakh. It is human nature that moments of happiness seem both short and near to him. Events from decades ago seem as if they happened just yesterday, and this perception will be even more intensified after witnessing the terrifying conditions of the Day of Resurrection. Some will call this life a week or ten days, and the wisest among them will refute the others and declare this life to be only a single day.
