ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ ﴿64﴾

Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allâh upon you, indeed you would have been among the losers.

(Ayah 64) ➊ After all these covenants and pledges, they withdrew from many matters of the Torah; thus, they altered the Torah, concealed its verses, disobeyed the commands of the Prophets (peace be upon them), denied some, killed some, repeatedly objected to Musa (peace be upon him) despite witnessing extraordinary blessings in the wilderness, disobeyed his commands, and caused him severe distress. When they were commanded to enter the Holy Land, they flatly refused, to the extent that Musa (peace be upon him) prayed to separate himself from these disobedient ones. This was the condition of the former ones; the latter ones, despite recognizing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), refused to believe in him.
➋ {لَكُنْتُمْ مِّنَ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ:} That is, despite all these acts of disobedience, instead of destroying you immediately with punishment, you were given respite for repentance and seeking forgiveness.

64. But then you turned away from this covenant after that. And if it had not been for the grace and mercy of Allah upon you, you would surely have been among the losers [82].

[82] Despite making such firm pledges, O Jews! You still broke your covenant. Even then, Allah showed mercy to you by letting you live, otherwise the list of your crimes is so long that it warranted your destruction.
