Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
But those who did wrong changed the word from that which had been told to them for another, so We sent upon the wrong-doers Rijz (a punishment) from the heaven because of their rebelling against Allâh’s obedience. (Tafsir At-Tabarî).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 59) But those wrongdoers mocked Allah’s command. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It was said to the Children of Israel: «{ وَادْخُلُواالْبَابَسُجَّدًاوَّقُوْلُوْاحِطَّةٌ }» ‘And enter the gate prostrating and say: Forgive [us].’” But they changed it and entered dragging themselves on their buttocks, and they said: [ حَبَّةٌفِيْشَعْرَةٍ ] “A grain in a stalk.” [ بخاری، أحادیث الأنبیاء، بابٌ : ۳۴۰۳۔ مسلم : ۳۰۱۵ ] Tell me, what could be greater stubbornness and opposition to the command of Allah than this? The Qur’an has described this great disobedience as “fisq,” which means to completely go beyond the limits set by Allah. On this basis, they were declared wrongdoers, and as a punishment for their wrongdoing, the plague was sent down upon them. The meaning of { ”رِجْزًا“ } is generally any punishment, but from the hadith it is known that what is meant is the plague. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ اَلطَّاعُوْنَرِجْسٌاُرْسِلَعَلٰیطَائِفَةٍمِنْبَنِيْاِسْرَائِيْلَأَوْعَلٰیمَنْكَانَقَبْلَكُمْ ][ بخاری، أحادیث الأنبیاء، باب : ۳۴۳۷، عن اسامۃ بن زید رضی اللہ عنھما ] “The plague is a punishment that was sent upon a group from the Children of Israel or upon those who were before you.” In Muslim, instead of { ”رِجْسٌ“ }, it is {”رِجْزٌ“}. [ مسلم، السلام، باب الطاعون والطیرۃ … : ۲۲۱۸ ] Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes that this story is also mentioned in Surah Al-A’raf, but since that surah is Makki, it is mentioned there in the third person, and this surah is Madani, and the Jews were present in Madinah, so it is mentioned in the second person. In short, there are ten differences between these two stories (in Al-Baqarah and Al-A’raf) in terms of context, some of which relate to wording and some to meaning. Imam Razi and Imam Zamakhshari (may Allah have mercy on them) have explained those ten differences in detail.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
59. 1 Its explanation comes in a hadith found in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, etc. The Prophet ﷺ said they were commanded to enter in a state of prostration, but they entered dragging their heads on the ground, and instead of obeying the command, the defiance and rebellion that had developed within them, and the mockery and ridicule of the divine commands that they committed, can be estimated. In reality, when a nation declines in character, its attitude towards the divine commands becomes like this.
59. 2 What was this heavenly punishment? Some have said it was divine wrath, severe cold, or plague. The last meaning is supported by a hadith. The Prophet ﷺ said this plague is part of that rijz and punishment which was sent upon some people before you. If this plague spreads in a place while you are present, do not leave from there, and if you learn that there is plague in another area, then do not go there.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
59. But the wrongdoers changed the word that had been said to them for another. So We sent down upon those wrongdoers a punishment from the sky because of their disobedience [75].
[75] The Arrogance of Bani Israel at the Time of Conquest:
But these people set aside the instructions of Allah and did the exact opposite. Instead of entering the town in prostration, they entered arrogantly, dragging themselves on their buttocks, and instead of repenting and seeking forgiveness, they pursued worldly wealth and riches, as is made clear by the following hadith. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah ؓ narrates: The Noble Prophet ﷺ said: "The Children of Israel were commanded to enter the gate of the city bowing and to say with their tongues «حطة» (that is, to seek forgiveness for their sins), but they entered dragging themselves on their buttocks and instead of «حِطَّةٌ», they began to say «حَبَّةٌ فى شعرة» (grain inside its husk)." [بخاري، كتاب التفسير] And in Muslim, instead of «حبة فى شعرة», the words «حنطة فى شعرة» (wheat in its husk) are mentioned. [مسلم، كتاب التفسير]
The Punishment of Plague:
When the Children of Israel took control of the city, they began to commit immoral acts, for which Allah punished them by sending down a calamity from the sky (in the form of a plague), as a result of which, according to one narration, seventy thousand Jews died.
