And fear a Day (of Judgement) when a person shall not avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from him nor will compensation be taken from him nor will they be helped.

(Ayah 48) ➊ After reminding them of the blessing, they were warned of the punishment of the Day of Resurrection. The root cause of corruption among the Children of Israel was that they took pride in their prophets and scholars and thought that no matter how many sins they committed, their elders and ancestors would secure forgiveness for them. This false assumption of theirs has been refuted. ➋ There can be three ways to free a captive person: either someone's intercession works, or he is freed by paying a ransom, or he is freed by forceful attack. On the Day of Resurrection, none of these will be possible. ➌ Apparently, from this verse, it seems that no intercession will be accepted on the Day of Resurrection, but in other places it has been clarified that the intercession which is negated is intercession for the disbelievers: «{ فَمَاتَنْفَعُهُمْشَفَاعَةُالشّٰفِعِيْنَ }»[ المدثر : ۴۸ ] "So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them." Similarly, intercession will not be possible without Allah's permission, as He said: «{ مَنْذَاالَّذِيْيَشْفَعُعِنْدَهٗۤاِلَّابِاِذْنِهٖ }»[ البقرۃ : ۲۵۵ ] "Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" Yes! For whomever Allah grants permission, intercession will be made and will benefit him. See Surah Ta Ha (109), and the ahadith about the intercession of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the believers on the Day of Resurrection are mutawatir (mass-transmitted).

And fear the Day when no soul will avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be helped [67].
[67] Relying on Intercession Alone is Sheer Foolishness:
The answer to their mistaken belief is given in this verse, that none of the four possible means of salvation from punishment will be of any use to you. That is, no one will be willing to bear another's burden, nor will anyone's intercession avail, nor will you be able to escape by paying a ransom, nor will you have any helper or supporter against Allah there. Therefore, understand well that merely being the descendants of prophets will never save you from the punishment for your deeds. It is true that on the Day of Judgment, the prophets and the righteous will intercede for the sinners, but the conditions for this intercession are such that relying on it is difficult. For example, only the one whom Allah permits will intercede, and only as much as Allah wills, or intercession will only be allowed for the sin for which Allah grants permission, and only for the person for whom intercession is accepted.
