And whatever you spend for spendings (e.g., in Sadaqah - charity for Allâh’s Cause) or whatever vow you make, be sure Allâh knows it all. And for the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers) there are no helpers.

(Ayah 270) ➊ {وَمَاۤاَنْفَقْتُمْمِّنْنَّفَقَةٍاَوْنَذَرْتُمْمِّنْنَّذْرٍ …:} The meaning of vow (nazar) is to make something obligatory upon oneself which was not originally obligatory, for example, any voluntary prayer, voluntary fast, charity, or voluntary Hajj, etc. There are two types of vows: one is an absolute vow and the other is a conditional vow. An absolute vow is when someone, without attaching any condition, makes a good deed obligatory upon himself solely for the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala, for example, saying that I will always or for a certain number of days perform Tahajjud prayer, or perform Umrah to please Allah Ta'ala. This type of vow is very beloved to Allah Ta'ala and it is necessary to fulfill it. A conditional vow is when someone makes a vow with a condition, that if a certain task of mine is accomplished, then I will perform such and such good deed, for example, charity or voluntary prayers, etc. This type of vow is not liked by Allah Ta'ala, because Allah Ta'ala is free of need from man's conditions, and He will not fulfill his wish because of it. The Messenger of Allah Ta'ala (peace be upon him) said: "Do not make vows, because vows do not change anything that is decreed by destiny; it only happens that wealth is taken out from a miser." [مسلم، النذر، باب النھی عن النذر… : ۱۶۴۰، عن أبی ہریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ ] However, if that task is accomplished, then the vow must be fulfilled. It is not permissible to fulfill a vow for a sinful act. If one cannot fulfill the vow, then its expiation must be given, which is the same as the expiation for an oath. See Surah Al-Ma'idah (89).
➋ { فَاِنَّاللّٰهَيَعْلَمُهٗ …:} That is, Allah Ta'ala is aware of your intentions and actions in every situation. In this, on one hand, there is a promise for the sincere, and on the other hand, there is a warning for the show-offs and those who make vows for other than Allah Ta'ala, that such people are wrongdoers and they will never be able to escape from Allah Ta'ala's punishment in any way.

270. 1. Nadhar means that if my such-and-such work is accomplished or I am saved from such-and-such difficulty, then I will give so much charity in the way of Allah Ta'ala. Fulfilling this nadhar is necessary; however, if the nadhar is made for any disobedience or unlawful act, then fulfilling it is not necessary. Nadhar, like prayer and fasting, is an act of worship; therefore, making a nadhar in the name of anyone other than Allah Ta'ala, which is an act of worshipping them, is shirk. As is common nowadays, the practice of making nadhar and offerings at famous graves is widespread. May Allah Ta'ala protect from this shirk.

270. Whatever you spend (in the way of Allah) or whatever vow you make, Allah [386] surely knows it. And the wrongdoers (those who spend against Allah’s command) will have no helpers.
[386] It is Necessary to Fulfill a Valid Vow:
A vow is when "a person makes a promise to Allah to perform a good deed or give charity upon the fulfillment of a wish, which was not previously obligatory upon him." If this wish is for something lawful and permissible, and it is asked from Allah alone, and the act that the person has vowed to perform upon its fulfillment is for Allah alone, then fulfilling such a vow is correct and a source of reward and merit. If the vow is for something unlawful or for other than Allah, then making such a vow is an act of sin and fulfilling it is a cause of punishment. If someone has already made such a vow, he should seek forgiveness in its place and should not perform that act. Moreover, from the Shari'ah point of view, making vows is not considered a good deed. Thus, Abdullah bin Umar ؓ narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from making vows and said that vows do not change Allah's decree.
