Those who break Allâh’s Covenant after ratifying it, and sever what Allâh has ordered to be joined (as regards Allâh’s religion of Islâmic Monotheism, and to practise its laws on the earth and also as regards keeping good relations with kith and kin), and do mischief on earth, it is they who are the losers.

(Ayah 27) Three characteristics of the defiantly disobedient who go astray instead of receiving guidance from Allah’s Book are mentioned: breaking Allah’s covenant, severing kinship and other mutual relations, and spreading corruption on earth, just as the polytheists broke the covenant that was taken from them with { «اَلَسْتُبِرَبِّكُمْ» }. [ الأعراف : ۱۷۲ ] The Jews and Christians broke the covenant that was taken from them to believe in the Prophet (peace be upon him), the disbelievers of Quraysh severed kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Muslims, and the hypocrites spread corruption on earth, and these three characteristics are found in all groups of disbelievers.

27. 1. The commentators have mentioned various meanings of عَھْدَ. For example, the command of Allah which He gave to the creation through the prophets (peace be upon them) to fulfill His commands and refrain from His prohibitions. 2. The covenant that was taken from the People of the Book in the Torah, that after the coming of the Last Prophet ﷺ, it would be necessary for you to affirm him and have faith in his prophethood, which was taken from all the progeny of Adam after Adam's children. This is mentioned in the Holy Quran. (وَاِذْاَخَذَرَبُّكَمِنْۢبَنِيْٓاٰدَمَمِنْظُهُوْرِهِمْ) 7:172. The meaning of breaking the covenant is to not care about the covenant (Ibn Kathir).
27. 2. It is obvious that the loss will be only for those who disobey Allah; nothing will harm Allah, His messengers, or those who invite to Him.

27. (That is,) those who break the covenant of Allah [35] after contracting it, and sever what Allah has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on the earth—these are the losers.
[35] Emphasis on Maintaining Ties of Kinship and Good Conduct with Relatives:
In this verse, the complete definition of the transgressors has been stated. That is, firstly, they break the covenant made with Allah «عهد الست بربكم»[172: 7], which was that we will worship Allah alone, and secondly, they sever those things—especially the ties of kinship—which Allah Almighty has commanded to maintain. The first type refers to the relationship between the servant and Allah, and the second type refers to the relationship between people. If regard is not given to both types of relationships, then all forms of corruption arise from here. Severing ties of kinship is such a great sin; observe this in the following hadith. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah ؓ says that the Prophet ﷺ said: When Allah Almighty had created all creation, the womb (rahm, kinship, in a personified form) stood up and held onto the waist of the Merciful Lord. Allah Almighty asked it: "What is the matter?" It replied: "I seek refuge with You from being cut off (that people will not maintain kinship)." Allah Almighty said: "Are you not pleased that I will maintain ties with the one who maintains you, and I will cut off the one who cuts you off?" The womb said: "My Lord, I am pleased with this." So Allah Almighty said: "So it shall be." Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah ؓ used to say: If you wish, you may recite this verse from Surah Muhammad in support of this hadith: ﴿ فَهَلْعَسَيْتُمْاِنْتَوَلَّيْتُمْاَنْتُفْسِدُوْافِيالْاَرْضِوَتُقَطِّعُوْٓااَرْحَامَكُمْ﴾[22: 47] That is, is it to be expected of you that if you are given authority, you will spread corruption in the land and sever ties of kinship.
