O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers).

(Ayah 254) ➊ The most difficult sacrifice for a person is that of life and wealth, and generally, the commands of Shariah are related to these two. In this surah, first, by saying «وَقَاتِلُوْافِيْسَبِيْلِاللّٰهِ »[ البقرۃ : ۲۴۴ ], the command of jihad was given, and from the verse: «مَنْذَاالَّذِيْيُقْرِضُاللّٰهَ … »[البقرۃ : ۲۴۵ ], encouragement was given to spend wealth for jihad. After that, with the story of Talut, the first command was emphasized, and with this verse, to emphasize the second command, the order to spend wealth was given again. (Razi) ➋ The purpose is that a person will leave behind all worldly means and resources and will appear alone before Allah Almighty. Therefore, for salvation in the Hereafter, make charity, almsgiving, and such good deeds a means. On the Day of Resurrection, worldly friendships, relationships, and intercession, etc., will be of no benefit. (Ibn Kathir) ➌ It is also understood from this verse that one who denies zakat is a disbeliever; thus, after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) fought against the deniers of zakat, just as is done with disbelievers. 254. 1. The Jews, Christians, and disbelieving polytheists held the belief about their respective leaders, prophets, saints, elders, and spiritual guides that they have such an influence over Allah that, by the force of their personality, they can have anything they wish for their followers accepted by Allah, and they do get it accepted. This is what they call intercession (shafa‘ah), meaning their belief was almost the same as that of today’s ignorant people: that our elders will go and sit before Allah and will not rise until they have secured our forgiveness. In this verse, it is stated that there is no such intercession in the presence of Allah. Then, in Ayat al-Kursi and in several other verses and hadiths, it is explained that indeed, there will be another kind of intercession with Allah, but only those will be able to intercede whom Allah permits, and He will permit only for the people of tawhid (monotheism). This intercession will be done by angels, prophets and messengers, and martyrs and righteous people, but none of them will have any influence over Allah. Rather, on the contrary, these very people will themselves be so fearful and trembling before Allah that the color will have drained from their faces. (وَلَايَشْفَعُوْنَ ۙ اِلَّالِمَنِارْتَضٰىوَهُمْمِّنْخَشْيَتِهٖمُشْفِقُوْنَ) 21:28

254. O you who believe! Spend from what We have provided for you before a Day comes when there will be no trading, no friendship, and no intercession. And the wrongdoers are those who deny these [360] truths.
[259] Here, the virtue of spending in the way of Allah is mentioned. Love for wealth is inherent in human nature, and if it is not spent, it becomes a trial and a cause of destruction for a person. Furthermore, O Muslims! The religion you have believed in requires wealth for its establishment and for paving its paths, as well as for helping the weak and needy individuals in society. Such acts of charity will also become a means of salvation for a person in the Hereafter, therefore special attention has been drawn to this. Once, a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Which charity is the greatest in terms of reward?" He ﷺ replied: "That which you give while you are healthy, desirous (of wealth), fearing poverty, and hoping for riches. So hasten to give charity, lest the soul reaches the throat and you begin to say, 'Give this much to so-and-so and that much to so-and-so,' while at that time, the wealth no longer belongs to you but to your heirs." [مسلم، كتاب الزكوٰة، باب ان افضل الصدقه صدقه الصحيح الشحيح] That is, on the Day of Resurrection, only your acts of charity will benefit you. Your business dealings and friendships will not avail you, nor will anyone's intercession be of use there.
[360] One meaning of this phrase could also be that those who do not give charity (especially zakat) are disbelievers, and they are the wrongdoers who do not spend in the way of Allah from the blessings granted by Allah. And another meaning is the one mentioned in the translation: that those who do not believe in Allah's law of reward and punishment and His system on the Day of Resurrection are both disbelievers and wrongdoers.
