وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عُرْضَةً لِّأَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ وَتُصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿224﴾
And make not Allâh’s (Name) an excuse in your oaths against your doing good and acting piously, and making peace among mankind. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower (i.e. do not swear much and if you have sworn against doing something good then give an expiation for the oath and do good).
وَلَا walā And (do) not
تَجْعَلُوا۟ tajʿalū make
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah's (name)
عُرْضَةًۭ ʿur'ḍatan an excuse
لِّأَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ li-aymānikum in your oaths
أَن an that
تَبَرُّوا۟ tabarrū you do good
وَتَتَّقُوا۟ watattaqū and be righteous
وَتُصْلِحُوا۟ watuṣ'liḥū and make peace
بَيْنَ bayna between
ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ l-nāsi [the] people
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
سَمِيعٌ samīʿun (is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌۭ ʿalīmun All-Knowing

(Ayah 224) Some people, in a fit of anger, swear an oath to not do a good deed, and then use this oath as a pretext to refrain from righteousness. In this verse, such people are being guided that you should not swear by Allah’s name in order to find an excuse to avoid good deeds like righteousness, piety, and making peace among people, because persisting in a wrong oath is a sin. See Surah An-Nur (22).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him): “When you swear an oath about something, then see that another action is better than it, then offer expiation for your oath and do what is better.” [ بخاری، الأیمان والنذور، باب قول اللہ تعالٰی : «لا یؤاخذکم اللہ …» : ۶۶۲۲ ] For the expiation of oaths, see Surah Al-Ma’idah (89).

224. 1. That is, do not swear such oaths in anger as: "I will not do good to so-and-so," "I will not speak to so-and-so," "I will not reconcile between so-and-so." For such oaths, it is mentioned in the hadith: if you take them, then break them and offer the expiation for the oath (For the expiation of an oath, see (لَا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللّٰهُ باللَّغْوِ فِيْٓ اَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلٰكِنْ يُّؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا عَقَّدْتُّمُ الْاَيْمَانَ ۚ فَكَفَّارَتُهٗٓ اِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسٰكِيْنَ مِنْ اَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُوْنَ اَهْلِيْكُمْ اَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ اَوْ تَحْرِيْرُ رَقَبَةٍ ۭ فَمَنْ لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلٰثَةِ اَيَّامٍ ۭذٰلِكَ كَفَّارَةُ اَيْمَانِكُمْ اِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ ۭ وَاحْفَظُوْٓا اَيْمَانَكُمْ ۭ كَذٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ اٰيٰتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُوْنَ 89؀) 5:89

224. And do not make Allah's [300] name an excuse in your oaths to prevent you from doing good, guarding against evil, or making peace among people. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Breaking an Oath for a Wrong Deed and Its Expiation:

That is, do not use Allah’s name to make an oath not to do a good deed, thereby bringing disrepute to Allah’s name, such as swearing that you will not speak to your parents, or that you will not treat your wife well, or that you will not give charity to someone, or that you will not reconcile between people. In other words, do not use Allah’s name in evil deeds, and if someone has done so, he should break the oath and pay its expiation. Thus, you ﷺ instructed ‘Abdur Rahman bin Samurah ؓ that if you swear an oath about something and then find that doing otherwise is better, then pay the expiation for your oath and do what you think is better.
