Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth, when or how you will, and send (good deeds, or ask Allâh to bestow upon you pious offspring) for your ownselves beforehand. And fear Allâh, and know that you are to meet Him (in the Hereafter), and give good tidings to the believers (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 223)➊ {فَاْتُوْاحَرْثَكُمْاَنّٰىشِئْتُمْ:} It is narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Jews used to say that if intercourse is done with a woman from her backside, the child will be born cross-eyed. Upon this, this verse was revealed. [ بخاری، التفسیر، باب « نساء کم حرث لکم » : ۴۵۲۸] Women are fields; there is no fixed position for intercourse, you may do it in any position, but it must be in the place of procreation. The anus is not the place of cultivation (field), it is the place of excretion. In the hadiths, going into the anus has been declared haram. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Cursed is the one who goes to a woman in her anus." [ أبو داوٗد، النکاح، باب فی جامع النکاح : ۲۱۶۲، عن أبی ہریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ و صححہ الألبانی ]
➋ { وَقَدِّمُوْالِاَنْفُسِكُمْ:} That is, send forth good deeds for yourselves. Righteous children are a person's best asset. The intention of having righteous offspring is also included at the time of intimacy with the wife.
➌ {وَاتَّقُوااللّٰهَوَاعْلَمُوْۤااَنَّكُمْمُّلٰقُوْهُ:} In the mutual affairs of husband and wife, if there is any excess, there is neither a witness nor an outsider, but meeting with Allah is certain, so fear Him.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
223. 1. The Jews believed that if intercourse was done with the woman lying on her stomach, the child would be born cross-eyed. In refutation of this, it is being said that whether intercourse is done from the front (with her lying on her back), from behind (with her lying on her stomach), or on her side, in whatever manner you wish, it is permissible, but it is necessary that in every case only the woman’s vagina is used. Some people argue from this (in whatever manner you wish) that the anus is also included, therefore the use of the anus is also permissible. But this is completely wrong. When the Quran has called the woman a field, it means that it is only for the use of the field that it is being said, “come to your fields as you wish,” and this field is only the vagina, not the anus. In any case, this is an unnatural act. A person who uses his wife’s anus has been declared accursed (referenced in Ibn Kathir and Fath al-Qadeer).
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
223. Your wives are your fields [298], so approach your fields as you wish. But provide for your future [299] (good deeds for your future), and fear Allah, and know that you will meet Him. And (O Prophet,) give the believers the good news (of success).
[298] Two types of hadiths have been narrated regarding the occasion of revelation of this verse. One is that the Jews used to say that if a person approaches his wife from behind, the child will be cross-eyed (in refutation of this notion) this verse was revealed. [بخاري، كتاب التفسير زير آيت مذكوره- مسلم، كتاب النكاح، باب جواز جماعه امراته فى قبلها من قدامها و من ورائها من غير تعرض للدبر] The second is that Umarؓ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "I am ruined." He ﷺ asked: "What has ruined you?" He said: "Today I turned my mount." The Prophet ﷺ did not reply until this verse was revealed (then he ﷺ said): "Have intercourse from the front or from behind, but do not do so in the anus or during menstruation." [ترمذي، ابواب التفسير، زير آيت مذكوره] Thus, in this verse, by likening the wife to a field, it has been made clear that the sperm, which is like a seed, should only be placed in the front (vagina). No matter in which manner it is placed—lying down, sitting, or from behind—it must be placed in the vagina, and it should be done with the intention of obtaining produce, i.e., children.
[299] The Purpose of Intercourse:
That is, do this for the sake of children and to preserve your lineage, so that after you depart from this world, there will be those present in your place to carry out the work of religion. And the second meaning is that you should properly raise your children, teach them knowledge, make them religious, improve their character, and in return, hope for reward from Allah Almighty in the Hereafter.
