أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تَدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَمَّا يَأْتِكُم مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلِكُم ۖ مَّسَّتْهُمُ ٱلْبَأْسَآءُ وَٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَزُلْزِلُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ مَتَىٰ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ نَصْرَ ٱللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ ﴿214﴾
Or think you that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, "When (will come) the Help of Allâh?" Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allâh is near!

ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believed
مَعَهُۥ maʿahu with him
مَتَىٰ matā When
نَصْرُ naṣru [will] (the) help
ٱللَّهِ ۗ l-lahi (of) Allah (come)

(Ayah 214) ➊ By {”الْبَاْسَآءُ“} is meant poverty and hunger, and by {” الضَّرَّآءُ“} is meant illness and physical hardships, and {”زُلْزِلُوْا“} means they were severely shaken.
➋ After the migration to Madinah, when the Muslims suffered severe hardships from the polytheists, hypocrites, and Jews, this verse was revealed. In it, the Muslims were comforted that these calamities and hardships in the path of religion are not coming upon you alone, but the people before you were also afflicted with poverty and hunger, loss of life and wealth, and severe fear and panic, to the extent that the Messenger of that time and those who believed with him cried out, “When will the help of Allah come?” Then, just as Allah’s help descended upon them, you too will be helped. Thus, when this stage came in the Battle of Ahzab, the scene of which Allah has depicted in Surah Ahzab (10, 12), Allah helped the Muslims. Remember, their saying “When will the help of Allah come?” was not in objection or complaint, but rather an expression of their helplessness and humility in a state of distress. (Razi, Ibn Kathir) Khabbab bin Arat (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We said, “O Messenger of Allah! Will you not seek victory for us? Will you not pray to Allah for us?” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Among those before you, a saw would be placed on the parting of a man’s head and it would reach his feet, but this would not turn him away from his religion, and iron combs would be used to separate his flesh and bones, but this would not turn him away from his religion.” Then he said: “By Allah! This matter will surely be completed, until a rider will travel from Sana’a to Hadramaut fearing none but Allah, or fearing the wolf for his sheep, but you are people who are hasty.” [ شعب الإیمان للبیہقی : 240/2، ح : ۱۶۳۳۔ بخاری : ۳۶۱۲۔ ابن کثیر : 251/1 ]

214. 1 After the migration to Madinah, when Muslims suffered various kinds of harm and hardship from the Jews, hypocrites, and Arab polytheists, some Muslims complained to the Prophet ﷺ. In response, this verse was revealed to comfort the Muslims, and the Prophet ﷺ himself said: "Those before you were sawed from their heads to their feet and their flesh was torn off with iron combs, but this oppression and torture could not turn them away from their religion." Then he said: "By Allah, Allah will complete this matter (i.e., Islam will prevail)."

214. 2 Therefore, (everything that is to come is near), and for the people of faith, Allah's help is certain, so it is indeed near.

214. Do you think you will enter Paradise without facing the trials that befell those before you? They were afflicted with such hardship and adversity that they were shaken to their very core, until even the Messenger and those who believed with him cried out, "When will Allah’s help [283] come?" (Allah assured them:) Behold! Allah’s help is surely near.

Glad Tidings of Government and Peace in the Makkan Period:

Then, whenever a new prophet is sent, he has to exert great effort to bring a community divided into many sects back onto one path and to make them one community again, and he faces many hardships and difficulties. The prophets themselves, as well as those who initially support them, face these hardships. This is because the forces of falsehood, which are much more powerful than the new prophet and his few followers in terms of wealth and manpower, confront them and do not hesitate even to crush them. These hardships are so severe that sometimes the prophets and their followers, due to human nature, cry out, "When will Allah's help come?"

The Complaint of Khabbab bin Aratؓ:

Once, the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in the shade of the wall of the Ka'bah, using his cloak as a cushion, when Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Aratؓ submitted, "why do you not pray to Allah?" Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ left the cushion and sat up straight. His face became red with anger. He ﷺ said: "People before you have passed such that iron combs were run through their flesh and sinews down to the bone, but they did not turn away from their true religion. And saws were placed on the middle of their heads and they were sawn into two pieces, but they did not turn away from their true religion. And Allah will certainly complete this matter, until a rider will travel from Sana'a to Hadramawt and will fear none but Allah." [بخاري۔ كتاب المناقب باب مالقي النبى واصحابه من المشركين بمكة] And in another narration in Bukhari, these words are added: "But you people are hasty."

Glad Tidings of a Peaceful Life:

In this hadith, there are several glad tidings for the Muslims. For example, that the period of harm and persecution from the disbelievers is soon to end. Then your own government will be established, in which everyone will be able to live a peaceful life. No thief, bandit, or robber will dare even to look covetously at another's wealth.
