And of them there are some who say: "Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!"

21. 1. That is, the ability to do good deeds; the people of faith do not seek worldly gains even in this world, rather they seek only the ability to do good. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this frequently. During Tawaf, instead of reciting different self-made supplications for each round, this supplication should be recited at the time of Tawaf. (رَبَّنَآاٰتِنَافِيالدُّنْيَاحَسَنَةً) 2:21. It is a Sunnah practice to recite this between Rukn Yamani and Hajar Aswad.

201. And among them are those who say, "Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us [272] from the punishment of the Fire."
[272] Comprehensive Supplication:
Since the world comes first and the Hereafter comes after, therefore Allah Almighty mentioned the world first. It is as if a believer seeks goodness from Allah Almighty in this world as well as in the Hereafter. And you already know the vastness contained in the word "goodness." This supplication is a very comprehensive type of supplication. That is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite this very supplication during Tawaf in Hajj and also at many other times. Comparison of the Objectives of Life Between a Worldly Person and a Believer:
In these two verses, a comparison is presented between the objectives of life of a worldly person and a believer. The person who does not believe in the Hereafter, the entire purpose of his life is the attainment of worldly interests. All his efforts are spent for this very purpose, but he receives only as much as Allah has decreed for him, and this alone is his share. Even if he had some good deeds to his credit, he will not receive any reward or recompense for them. In contrast, the purpose of a believer is the attainment of interests of the Hereafter, and he will indeed receive them. However, the interests of worldly life are not forbidden for him either; rather, he will certainly receive as much of them as Allah Almighty has decreed for him. Therefore, the manner of his supplication is such that he asks his Lord for both the world and the interests of the Hereafter. Thus, such people are, in any case, the ones who remain in benefit.
