176. This is because Allah sent down the Book with the truth, but those who disagreed about the Book [220] have gone far into discord.
[220] The Causes of Disunity in the Ummah and Sectarianism:
In this verse, Allah Almighty has informed us of a very great reality, which is that those who differ and split into various sects do not do so because the truth becomes ambiguous to them, but rather the real reason is their mutual stubbornness, in which they go to great lengths. Thus, you may observe for yourself that all the sects that have arisen in Islam, all of them argue in their own favor from the Book and the Sunnah. This reasoning is generally incorrect, and sometimes it is correct, but when stubbornness arises instead of tolerance in the difference of reasoning, and the one making the argument becomes obstinate upon his own view, it is from here that the beginning of a new sect starts. For this, there are numerous stern warnings in the Noble Quran. It should be clear that the foundation of every misguided sect is either established upon some polytheistic belief and practice, or upon some innovative (bid‘ah) belief and practice. Then, they try to forcibly prove their innovative belief as correct or permissible from the Book and the Sunnah. Now, it is obvious that whoever wants to introduce an innovative belief or practice, there will be someone to stop and object to him. But for the originator of the innovative belief and his followers, instead of accepting the truth, it becomes a matter of ego and stubbornness. In this way, a new sect comes into existence, and this reality has been mentioned in four different places in the Noble Quran. And its reason has been stated as ﴿بَغْيًابَيْنَهُمْ﴾. That is, the reason is never that the Book and the Sunnah do not contain a clear solution for it. [نيز ديكهئے اسي سورة كا حاشيه نمبر 282]
