فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ ﴿152﴾

Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying), I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.

(Ayah152) ➊ {فَاذْكُرُوْنِيْۤ: } In this, the meaning of "fa" is that I have bestowed the favor of completing My blessing upon you through My Messenger and the Qur'an, so it is also obligatory upon you that you remember Me and keep Me in mind. The meaning of dhikr is to remember with the tongue as well as with the heart and actions. This is the opposite of forgetfulness (nisyan). Allah the Exalted said: «وَ الَّذِيْنَ اِذَا فَعَلُوْا فَاحِشَةً اَوْ ظَلَمُوْۤا اَنْفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللّٰهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوْا لِذُنُوْبِهِمْ» [ آل عمران : ۱۳۵ ] "And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins." When a person acts upon any command of Allah, enjoins good, forbids evil, then he is also remembering Allah. Remembering does not mean that one should recite dhikr a hundred thousand times daily with the tongue and forget Allah's commands and the responsibilities He has placed. Even if the disbelievers take over all the lands of Islam, we would have no time for anything but completing our daily thousand units of prayer. «اَذْكُرْكُمْ» "I will remember you"—this is the greatest virtue of remembering Allah. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah the Exalted says: If (My servant) remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself, and if he remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in a better assembly than that." ➋ {وَ اشْكُرُوْا لِيْ:} Gratitude is expressed both by the tongue and by actions, as Allah the Exalted said: «اِعْمَلُوْۤا اٰلَ دَاوٗدَ شُكْرًا» [ سبا : ۱۳] "O family of Dawud! Work deeds of gratitude." If the action does not correspond to the blessing, then it is not gratitude.

➌ {وَ لَا تَكْفُرُوْنِ: } This includes every form of ingratitude and disbelief, whether by the tongue or by actions. For example, saying "Alhamdulillah" with the tongue, but naming one's sons "Peeran Ditta," considering others besides Allah as possessing divine powers, continuing to consume usury even after hearing Allah's declaration of war, promoting indecency in the home, taking bribes and calling it "the bounty of my Lord," and shaving the beard to express aversion to the beautiful appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—these are not gratitude but the worst forms of disbelief and ingratitude.

152. 1. So, for these blessings, remember Me and be grateful. Do not be ungrateful for the blessings. The meaning of remembrance is to remember Allah at all times, that is, to exalt and glorify Him. Gratitude means to use the powers and energies given by Allah in obedience to Him. To use God-given powers in disobedience to Allah is ingratitude (denial of blessings). There is the promise of further favors for being grateful and the warning of severe punishment for ingratitude. As in (لَئِنْ شَکَرْ تُمْ لَاَزَیْدَنَّکُمْ ْ وَلَئِنَ کَفَرْ تُمْ اِنَّ عذَابِیْ لَشَدِیْد) 14:7

152. So remember Me, I will remember you, and be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful.

[190] Therefore, it is obligatory for you to remember Me at all times, and if you remember Me, I will remember you. Thus, Hazrat Abu Hurairah ؓ says that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah Almighty says: 'I treat My servant according to his expectation of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him in My heart, and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than that. If he comes near Me by a span, I come near him by a cubit, and if he comes near Me by a cubit, I come near him by the length of outstretched arms, and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.'" [ بخاري، كتاب التوحيد، باب قول اللّٰه وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللّٰهُ نَفْسَهٗ۔۔۔ الخ]

The Virtue of Gratitude:

By expressing gratitude to Allah, not only does Allah Almighty preserve that blessing, but He also grants even more. In the case of ingratitude, not only is the blessing taken away, but there is also punishment from Allah Almighty. Thus, Allah Almighty says: ﴿لَيِٕنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَاَزِيْدَنَّكُمْ وَلَيِٕنْ كَفَرْتُمْ اِنَّ عَذَابِيْ لَشَدِيْدٌ﴾ [7: 14]
"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you, and if you are ungrateful, (then know) that My punishment is severe."
