تِلْكَ أُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ ۖ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُم مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ ۖ وَلَا تُسْـَٔلُونَ عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿141﴾
That was a nation who has passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned, and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do.

In this verse, it is again warned that salvation is related to one's own earnings and actions; if you desire salvation, then act like these prophets and righteous people, otherwise merely associating with them and narrating their wonders will not benefit you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَنْ أَبْطَأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهٖ نَسَبُهُ] [ مسلم، الذکر والدعاء، باب فضل الاجتماع … : ۲۶۹۹، عن أبی ہریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ ] "Whoever is held back by his deeds, his lineage will not push him forward."

141. 1. In this verse, again the importance of earning and action is stated, and attachment to elders or reliance on them is declared useless. Whoever is left behind by his deeds, his lineage will not advance him. The meaning is that you will not benefit from the righteousness of your family, nor will you be questioned about their sins; rather, you will not be questioned about their deeds, nor will they be questioned about yours, verse (وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزْرَ اُخْرٰى) 35:18. Verse (وَاَنْ لَّيْسَ لِلْاِنْسَانِ اِلَّا مَا سَعٰى) 53:39. No one will bear the burden of another.

That was a community that has passed away. They will have what they earned, and you will have what you earn. And you will not be questioned about their deeds [173].

[173] This verse, in these very words, has already appeared before [آيت نمبر 134]. There, the addressees were the Jews, while here, Jews, Christians, and Muslims are all addressed. The purpose of repeating it is only to provide further warning and emphasis that relying on your prophets and righteous people for salvation in the Hereafter is completely futile. You will be answerable for your own deeds and will bear their consequences yourselves.
