Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And when it is said to them (hypocrites): "Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, Al-Ansâr and Al-Muhajirûn) have believed," they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they know not.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 13) ➊ By {”النَّاسُ“} is meant the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who believed with sincerity and became united in one direction, and did not care about any worldly loss. The hypocrites called them foolish and considered themselves wise, because in their view they benefited from both sides and did not let any harm come to their worldly interests. Allah Almighty declared the hypocrites themselves to be foolish, because they had no credibility with the Muslims nor with the disbelievers, and for the sake of a few days’ benefit in this life, they lost the everlasting life. He (Allah) stated that these are such fools that they are not even aware of their own foolishness. ➋ This verse proves the virtue of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), as the hypocrites were commanded to believe as they believed.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
1. These hypocrites called those Companions foolish who did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives and wealth in the way of Allah, and today’s hypocrites try to make it seem that, God forbid, the Companions were deprived of the wealth of faith. Allah Almighty has refuted both the modern and ancient hypocrites. He said that sacrificing worldly interests for a higher purpose is not foolishness, but true wisdom and good fortune. The Companions proved this good fortune. Therefore, they are not only true believers but also a standard and criterion for faith; now, only the faith of those will be valid who believe as the Companions believed (فَاِنْاٰمَنُوْابِمِثْلِمَآاٰمَنْتُمْبِهٖفَقَدِاھْتَدَوْا) 2:137
2. Obviously, to ignore (delayed benefit) for (immediate benefit), to prefer the fleeting life of this world over the lasting and eternal life of the Hereafter, and to fear people instead of Allah is the height of foolishness, which these hypocrites committed. Thus, they remained ignorant of an established reality.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
13. And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people [19] have believed," they say, "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Beware! Truly, it is they who are the fools, but they do not know [20].
[19] In this verse, "people" refers to the true believers, i.e., the Muhajirun, Ansar, and others. The hypocrites called them foolish because they were true believers. Unlike the hypocrites, they were not self-interested, but rather, for the sake of religion, they were ready to face the toughest situations, even to the extent of sacrificing their lives. [20] That is, they do not know that giving preference to temporary and worldly interests over religion, faith, and principles is the greatest foolishness. And what were these temporary interests? They were the protection of their lives and wealth by the Muslims, forming relationships with Muslims, and if they participated in battle—even if their inner intentions were impure—in case of victory, they would receive a share of the spoils of war.
