The Cow · Medinan · Juz 1 · Page 18

And those who have no knowledge say: "Why does not Allâh speak to us (face to face) or why does not a sign come to us?" So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike, We have indeed made plain the signs for people who believe with certainty.
وَقَالَ waqāla And said
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
لَا (do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna know

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 118) By this are meant the disbelievers of Arabia who, like the people before them, that is, the Jews and Christians, made similar demands. See also Surah Bani Isra'il (90 to 93), Al-Furqan (21), and Surah Al-Muddathir (52) { ”تَشَابَهَتْ قُلُوْبُهُمْ“ } meaning all of their thinking is alike, and it is stated that the truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is clear from the Noble Qur'an; if these people were people of certainty, these proofs would have been sufficient. (Al-Manar)

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

118. 1. This refers to the polytheists of Arabia who, like the Jews, demanded why Allah does not speak to us directly, or why He does not show us a great sign? Upon seeing which, we would become Muslims, as has been mentioned in 93 17:90, and also in other places.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

118. The ignorant say, "Why does Allah not speak to us, or why does a sign [139] not come to us?" Those before them said similar things. Their hearts [140] are alike. We have certainly made the signs clear for people who have certainty [141].

[139] That is, such demands are made by ignorant people, that Allah Almighty Himself should come to us and tell us that this is truly My Messenger, or show us such a clear sign or miracle that we become certain. Only then can we believe. All these are ignorant statements, and most of them are impossible to fulfill. People before also made such demands, and even today ignorant people make similar demands.
[140] That is, in terms of temperament, there is no difference between the misguided people of earlier times and these misguided people. Such ignorant people continue to present the same kinds of objections and demands.
[141] And for those who wish to believe, there is no shortage of Our signs. With every single verse, their faith becomes stronger and stronger, and as for those who insist on disbelief, no sign is visible to them.
