وَقَالُوا۟ لَن يَدْخُلَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَن كَانَ هُودًا أَوْ نَصَـٰرَىٰ ۗ تِلْكَ أَمَانِيُّهُمْ ۗ قُلْ هَاتُوا۟ بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ ﴿111﴾
And they say, "None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian." These are their own desires. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), "Produce your proof if you are truthful."
وَقَالُوا۟ waqālū And they said
لَن lan Never
يَدْخُلَ yadkhula will enter
ٱلْجَنَّةَ l-janata the Paradise
إِلَّا illā except
مَن man who
كَانَ kāna is
هُودًا hūdan (a) Jew[s]
أَوْ aw or
نَصَـٰرَىٰ ۗ naṣārā (a) Christian[s]
تِلْكَ til'ka That
أَمَانِيُّهُمْ ۗ amāniyyuhum (is) their wishful thinking
قُلْ qul Say
هَاتُوا۟ hātū Bring
بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ bur'hānakum your proof
إِن in if
كُنتُمْ kuntum you are
صَـٰدِقِينَ ṣādiqīna [those who are] truthful

(Ayah 111) ➊ In this verse, a long matter has been summarized briefly, that is, the Jews said that none will ever enter Paradise except those who are Jews, and the Christians said that none will ever enter Paradise except those who are Christians, because neither group believed that the other would enter Paradise. It is said, these are merely their desires; they have no connection with reality. If they are truthful, then let them bring their proof. Razi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, from this verse it is proven that anyone who makes a claim, whether it is a claim of negation or affirmation, it is necessary for him to present evidence and proof, and this is the truest and firmest proof of the invalidity of anything said merely by imitation (because imitation means to accept something without evidence).
➋ Because { اَمَانِيُّهُمْ :} is a definite noun, "merely" has been added in the translation. Nowadays, Muslims too are caught up merely in wishes and delusions, whereas Islam in name alone is neither a guarantee of honor in this world nor in the Hereafter.
