(Ayah 56){وَاذْكُرْفِيالْكِتٰبِاِدْرِيْسَ … :} This is the sixth story, that of Idris (peace be upon him). Some commentators have counted Idris (peace be upon him) among the prophets of Bani Israel and have given the reason that during the event of Mi'raj, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met him, he addressed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as {’’مَرْحَبًابِالنَّبِيِّالصَّالِحِوَالْأَخِالصَّالِحِ‘‘} ("Welcome to the righteous prophet and righteous brother") and did not say {’’مَرْحَبًابِالْوَلَدِالصَّالِحِ‘‘} ("Welcome to the righteous son") as Adam and Ibrahim (peace be upon them) did. According to Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him), this is also the opinion of Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), because in {’’بَابُذِكْرِإِدْرِيْسَعَلَيْهِالسَّلاَمُ ‘‘} he has brought the hadith of Mi'raj. See Fath al-Bari {’’ بَابُذِكْرِاِدْرِيْسَعَلَيْهِالسَّلاَمُ‘‘} In the previous chapter, Imam Bukhari said: "It is mentioned from Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that Ilyas is Idris." Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) has also considered the mention of this statement as an expression of Imam Bukhari's opinion that Idris (peace be upon him) was not before Nuh (peace be upon him) but after him, because in the Qur'an, Ilyas (peace be upon him) has been counted among the descendants of Nuh or Ibrahim (peace be upon them). See Surah Al-An'am (84, 85). But the research of most commentators is that his era was even before Nuh (peace be upon him), thus Bukhari has said in the chapter heading of {’’بَابُذِكْرِإِدْرِيْسَعَلَيْهِالسَّلاَمُ‘‘}: {’’ وَهُوَجَدُّأَبِيْنُوْحٍوَيُقَالُجَدُّنُوْحٍعَلَيْهُمَاالسَّلاَمُ ‘‘} meaning he is the great-grandfather of Nuh (peace be upon him), and some say he is the grandfather of Nuh (peace be upon him). This is also the opinion of Ibn Jarir, Qurtubi, and Ibn Kathir (may Allah be pleased with them). The evidence for this is coming in the commentary of verse (58) of this Surah.

56. And mention in the Book Idris: he was a man of truth [53] and a Prophet.
[53] The Era and Center of Preaching of Sayyiduna Idris:
Sayyiduna Idrisؑ was sent long before Sayyiduna Nuhؑ. His center of preaching was Babylon. His people were star-worshippers and nature-worshippers. He was an expert in geometry, arithmetic, and astronomy. Also, writing with a pen, sewing clothes, making measuring instruments, and manufacturing weapons began in his era. He was an eloquent orator and was given the title of Hermes al-Haramisah. His people refused to accept his call and turned to opposition. Eventually, he migrated to Egypt, where many people believed in him. On the night of Mi'raj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met him on the fourth heaven.
