He (the father) said: "Do you reject my gods, O Ibrâhîm (Abraham)? If you stop not (this), I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely (before I punish you)."

(Ayah 46) ➊ The meaning of {قَالَاَرَاغِبٌاَنْتَعَنْاٰلِهَتِيْيٰۤاِبْرٰهِيْمُ : ’’ رَغِبَفِيْهِ ‘‘} is to incline, and the meaning of {’’ رَغِبَعَنْهُ ‘‘} is to show disinclination. The father, in response, rejected the son's statement and began with the interrogative hamzah, saying, "Are you one who turns away from my gods, O Abraham!?" This shows that, to him, turning away from idols was a greater offense, which is why he mentioned {’’ اَرَاغِبٌ ‘‘} first, even though it is the predicate. As for the son, since he forbade shirk, he was addressed with {’’ اَنْتَ ‘‘ } as the subject but was mentioned later, and the name of Abraham became so detestable that it was mentioned last. Look at Abraham (peace be upon him), who begins every statement with {’’ يٰۤاَبَتِ ‘‘}, while the special favor of the polytheist father is that he addressed him only at the end. From this, it is understood that friendship and enmity based on creed are stronger than those based on lineage. ➋ { لَىِٕنْلَّمْتَنْتَهِلَاَرْجُمَنَّكَ … :’’ تَنْتَهِ ‘‘} was originally {’’تَنْتَهِيْ‘‘}, but due to {’’ لَمْ ‘‘}, the ya was dropped. The meaning of {’’ مَلِيًّا ‘‘} is "safe and sound," and another meaning is "for a long time." If you do not desist from rejecting and showing aversion to the idols, I will stone you, meaning I will finish you by pelting you with stones. So leave me and go away safe and sound, lest you end up breaking your bones because of me. The second meaning is: leave me for a long time so that I do not see your face. ➌ In this incident, there is comfort for our Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because he too faced similar treatment from his relatives. Likewise, there is comfort for every caller to the truth, that upon proclaiming the truth, he must be prepared to face severe opposition from his closest relatives. Especially when the disbelievers are left speechless before the evidence, their rage exceeds all bounds, just as here, when Abraham (peace be upon him) left his father speechless, the father threatened to stone him and expelled him from the house. When the priests were left speechless after the idols were broken, they said: «{ حَرِّقُوْهُوَانْصُرُوْۤااٰلِهَتَكُمْ }»[ الأنبیاء : ۶۸ ] "Burn him and help your gods." When the people of Lot (peace be upon him) were left speechless, they said: «{ اَخْرِجُوْهُمْمِّنْقَرْيَتِكُمْ }»[ الأعراف : ۸۲ ] "Expel them from your town." When the people of Noah (peace be upon him) were left speechless, they said: «{ لَىِٕنْلَّمْتَنْتَهِيٰنُوْحُلَتَكُوْنَنَّمِنَالْمَرْجُوْمِيْنَ }»[ الشعراء : ۱۱۶ ] "O Noah! If you do not desist, you will surely be among those who are stoned." When Pharaoh was helpless before the arguments of Moses (peace be upon him), he said: «{ لَىِٕنِاتَّخَذْتَاِلٰهًاغَيْرِيْلَاَجْعَلَنَّكَمِنَالْمَسْجُوْنِيْنَ }»[الشعراء : ۲۹ ] "If you take a god other than me, I will surely make you among the imprisoned." Before all these threats from the disbelievers, Allah Almighty mentioned the arguments of the Prophets (peace be upon them), which are remarkable, and in response, the helplessness of the disbelievers is absolutely clear. When the disbelievers had no option left before our beloved Prophet, they plotted to kill, imprison, or exile him, about which Allah Almighty says: «{ وَاِذْيَمْكُرُبِكَالَّذِيْنَكَفَرُوْالِيُثْبِتُوْكَاَوْيَقْتُلُوْكَاَوْيُخْرِجُوْكَ }»[ الأنفال : ۳۰ ] "And when those who disbelieved were plotting against you to imprison you, or kill you, or expel you."

46. The father replied, "Abraham! Have you turned away from my gods? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you. So go away from me for a long time [43]."
[43] The Father Expelling Sayyiduna Ibrahimؑ from the House:
The father Azar, who was a court priest, idol sculptor, and idol seller—how could he possibly give up his livelihood and position at his son's request? In response to his advice and admonition, he said: It seems you have turned away from the ancestral religion and have become of corrupt belief. I have no need for such irreligious offspring. If you do not change your attitude, I will stone you, and it is better that you immediately get out of my sight and leave my house.
