Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 16) ➊ { وَاذْكُرْفِيالْكِتٰبِمَرْيَمَ :} The stories of Zakariya and Maryam (peace be upon them) are mentioned together in Surah Aal-e-Imran (35 to 40), Surah Anbiya (39 to 41), and here, due to their relevance, because there are several kinds of connections between them. Seeing the miracle of Maryam (peace be upon her) receiving out-of-season fruits, Zakariya (peace be upon him) developed a desire and hope for a child at an unusual time. Then Zakariya (peace be upon him) was granted a son against the norm, and Maryam (peace be upon her) gave birth to a son even more extraordinarily. Both stories are evidence of Allah Almighty’s perfect power.
➋ { اِذِانْتَبَذَتْمِنْاَهْلِهَامَكَانًاشَرْقِيًّا : ’’نَبَذَ‘‘} means to throw. {’’ انْتَبَذَتْ ‘‘} became separated, meaning she became completely isolated, as if she threw herself away from her family. Remember that Maryam (peace be upon her) was dedicated by her mother for the service of Bayt al-Maqdis, and she used to remain there in worship under the guardianship of her brother-in-law Zakariya (peace be upon him). In the hadith of Mi’raj, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Yahya and Isa (peace be upon them) maternal cousins. The piety, purity, and nobility of Maryam (peace be upon her) were proverbial. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : ۳۴۱۱۔ مسلم :۲۴۳۱ ] “Many men attained perfection, but among women, none attained perfection except Asiya, the wife of Pharaoh, Maryam bint Imran, and the superiority of Aisha over other women is like the superiority of Tharid (bread soaked in meat broth) over all other foods.” Some commentators have explained the separation as due to her menstrual period, and some have said it was for complete seclusion for worship; apparently, either of these could be the reason. Allah Almighty has not stated the reason. The real truth is best known to Him. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said that the Christians made the east their qiblah because the birth of Masih (peace be upon him) to Maryam (peace be upon her) took place on the eastern side of Bayt al-Maqdis.
